PE Gondola
Bob Webber
I'm going through an old album of my father's - the date is
likely around 1952, as others are of that era. About 68 years
ago.
I doubt anyone would guess where this was taken, or on which railroad. This Pacific Electric GS Gondola, was taken on either of two lines, the Soo Line, or the MT&W, as at this time, he was with his parents in beautiful Tomahawk, WI. He hadn't yet started working for the PRR, though he had been studying in Milwaukee. A pity that he didn't have a nice digital video or even a good cell phone w/camera. Changed the hobby, in many ways. There is an outside chance of this being on the DM&IR as there are a host of steam locomotives of the Missabe - but several pages past this page. But this is in between the Soo FAs and the MT&W steam. It was well after the Grab Baggage & Walk steam & early diesels. Any way you cut it, a long way from home.... Bob Webber

Calcium carbide used to be the source of acetylene gas for welding & cutting – just add water. (i.e. your containers had better be very water tight or bad things happen.)

Hi,
Those cars are all marked for Linde and have a "W 1402" hazard lable. With just that information it should be possible to identify what is in them. However, these are far too late for this group's rules. - Jim

I'd call this a flat car fitted with sides, Bob, but, wow, look at the radius of the curve at the bottom of that fishbelly side piece! Either the sheet the side was formed from was heavier than normal or it was formed on a press that could not exert enough pressure to result in a smaller radius for that curve. My bet is on the latter. Thanks for posting this photo, Don Valentine

Container Car Help
Garth Groff and Sally Sanford
Thank you all for your insights on the container flat car. With the clues y'all gave me, I was able to learn that the car likely belonged to Carbide Industries, Incorporated. Although they apparently have outlets around the country, their main location is Louisville, Kentucky. That may be where we get the "K" in CCKX. I can't explain the CCAX marks, though I certainly don't dispute the photographic evidence. Neither reporting mark is in my 1958 ORER, and from the design of the car I have concluded that it is indeed beyond our period of interest. And friends, Judson Steel's Emeryville plant dates to well within our period of interest. They seem to have been a re-processor of scrap metal, and I remember passing the works as a teenager in the 1960s many times. I noted that SP GS gondolas were frequently in evidence. The plant had a short narrow gauge railroad as well. I only saw the locomotive once as my father drove by on the freeway. After I went off to college, he somehow took several shots of the narrow gauge line (probably through a fence). Those photos are in my collection now, though we don't do narrow gauge here. I hear the sheriff jangling his keys, so back to pre-1961 standard gauge. Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

San Leandro is also quite close to South San Francisco where I saw these
cars, altho it is on the other side of San Francisco bay.
I found the photos I myself took, these were taken probably in the late
1980s or early 1990s. The car reporting marks on the car I photographed are
CCAX, not CCKX, but the car and the container loads look more than very
similar.

Steel. My January 1976 ORER shows the CCKX mark as being owned by California Contemporary, Inc. It appears CC was the owner, not the shipper. Oddly, all 95 cars they owned appear to have been container flats, similar to the subject cars. They owned NOT ONE furniture shipping boxcar. Weird, eh? Home points are listed as ACF, Portland; Reading Railroad, Reading; Cape Fear Car Service, Fayetteville; New Haven RR, Maybrook; and Fabricated Metals, Modena PA and San Leandro CA. Note that San Leandro is about 10 miles south of my photo location. Ed Edward Sutorik

Of course, I can scratch-bash them, if needed, but if one of you happened to have a spare set.
I do have the Sunshine kit, so I could also copy cast the doors from that kit, but where would I get that small an amount of resin? Or is there some substitute I'm missing? Since I'm not contemplating any major casting projects in the near future!
