Scalecoat Oxide Red (SC #2), The Red #12 is a deeper more Tuscan Red. Scalecoat also nows makes SC-87 (Boxcar Red #2) and SC-88 (Boxcar Red #3) and SC-81 (PRR Freight Car Red) as well as the old SC-13 (Boxcar Red) which has a slightly more maroonish hue. They're all great for mixing & matching! Tim O'Connor

I noticed the lettering sloughed off easily and separately from the paint. So from this clue, if I wanted just to remove the letters, I would first try to put a little stripper on a Q-Tip and see if that would soften the letters without damaging the paint... Don't use any stripper with isopropyl alcohol because that will really go after the paint Athearn (i.e. China) is using now! Tim O'Connor

Removing Athearn Lettering
Richard Hendrickson
I have an inquiry from a modeler who is not on this list about how to
remove lettering from an Athearn Santa Fe 50' refrigerator car model. As I have no experience removing lettering (but not paint) from current Athearn products, I would appreciate hearing from some list subscribers who have done so. Thanks! Richard Hendrickson

John Riddell <jriddell@...>
This is one of 25 steel-frame narrow-gauge refrigerator cars built by
C.C.&F.- Montreal, (in lot 1689) in June 1945 for the Newfoundland Railways - series 325-349. It has an overall length of 37', ih of 7-4 and 6-10 wide hinged doors. Originally olive with black lettering. CN acquired the NR in 1949 and subsequently renumbered them 7250-7274. They were replaced with new reefers between 1953 and 1960. There is a 1952 color photo of the cars in service on page 121 of Morning Sun book 'CN Color Guide'. John Riddell

Re: Early freight car manufactures
Roger Hinman <rhinman@...>
A good place to start would be the Wood Car Builder's website hosted now by the MidContinent Railway Museum; that will give you a feel for the companies in business during the timeframe of your interest. The railroad periodicals of the era often carried notice of railroads making a purchase order and often published plans if a carbuilder was willing to share them. The American publshed Railroad Gazette and the British published Engineering are two recommendations. Libraries in my neck of the woods still carry some of these
