Re: Cocoa Beach 2010 -
np328
Add my name to the folks very happy with the 2010 meet.
Of the weather, it was nice on Wednesday when we got off the plane, even got to eat outside lunch and dinner that Wednesday, as we did later on Sunday at Fort Lauderdale and Monday and Tuesday at Miami. Even saw girls in bikinis on the beach at both places Monday and Tuesday which certainly made Saturday's rain seem so distant. A nice even predictable climate controlled temperature is available once one is dead and buried six feet under. Until then - Vive la difference! Thanks to all of you who braved airport security and brought and displayed your models. If you brought models and no one commented, leave open the possibility that it was because we mere motals wonder how to achieve what we saw. And thanks to presenters who showed us how to hone our skills. Every presentation I attended was helpful and well thought out. My only suggestion would be to offer larger font colored schedules like the prelim that was posted prior to the convention. Heck, I would even pay a dollar or two above the registration for one of those. Other than that, Very Well Done !!! to Mike, Jeff and the rest of the crew. BTW - Mike, my wife took a tour of your employer and said it was most enjoyable. Jim Dick - St. Paul, MN

Mike et al, so sorry I could not attend this year; it sounds like there were some great clinics. Would love to see pictures of Mike Rose's elevator complex and I've always been a big fan of harbor railroading. Damned hurt back ruined my Christmas and New Year; am still trying to get over it so I can get back to work on my RR. Davo in Orlando

Re: FGEX Lettering Drawing
railsnw1 <railsnw@...>
Well George Elwood got back to me an he sent me an 8 MB tif file of the drawing which has some interesting dates. The drawing is 12-D-97 "Lettering Arrangement (Swinging Door Cars)" and is dated 9-14-1951.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
On November 7, 1951 Revision A was created "Revised account changing date built stencil & adding superseding note". The note stated "This tracing supersede's wood & steel sheathed car lettering arrangements DWG's 4-D-60-I, 7-D-89-B, 8-D-12-B, 9-D-8-C, 9-D-55-F (?), 10-D-5 & 12-D-18, account eliminating the word Ventilator". Revision B was created 1-16-1953: "Revised account showing LT. WT. stencil without border. Black letters on yellow background. Date built stencil next to car dimensions. Journal box repacking stencil also in black letters on yellow background. Eliminating built new stencil and note on built new plate". Revision C dated 9-10-57: "Rev. account adding; wood door threshold to be painted FGE std. yellow. End stencil - ref. P-11, defect card holder stencil. Adjustable bunker stencil and ref. removed". This info was of great interest to me as I have been trying to pin down the lettering on our 1953 Western Fruit Express WHIX 70325 and our FGEX 16134. It explains why the 1952 WHIX cars had the black background on the Lt. Wt. and our November 1953 car does not. Also the time period "Ventilator" dropped off. Richard Wilkens

Rueben, I have scanned the instructions for about 40 kits and have many more
I haven't scanned yet but will if they're on your list. The PDF files run from about 2 - 5GB each. When you send the list, let me know if you want them emailed or snail mailed. It sounds like you may need the PDSs too to help sort/match some of your stuff. Between Dennis Williams and me, I think we can take care of most of your needs. Appreciation Lunch
Mike Brock <brockm@...>
Hi, Al,
Prototype Rails wants to show its appreciation to the registration team by buying it lunch. If I get over the cold...sure couldn't be a Hot...which I acquired during the meet, we'll do it this coming Saturday if you registration guys are available. We'll use Chilies as usual. If we can't get everyone together, we'll try another Sat. Do NOT go to Chilies on the 16th unless you hear from me again. Mike Brock

Thanks, will post my list soon. I put the kits in plastic bags and have been dividing them individually. At first just lumped them together. Didn't realize what I had.

Re: Cocoa Beach 2010

I think previous years' schedules were done (or made available) in Excel which was easier to strip the colors. I have made it a habbit of doing so and highlighting the clinics I plan to attend. Also (for me at least) last minute changes are easier.

Prototype Rails at Cocoa Beach. Thank you. Let me add that the 3X5 clinic schedule is certainly do-able if a supply of microfisch readers is available. Seriously, my problem with the schedule was it being a black and white copy of a color coded original. The shading obscured the text in many areas. But this minor thing did not spoil my enjoyment of sharing and fellowship. Thanks again to Jeff, Mike, Marty, et al. (Who got all the warm cookies this year? Not me!) Chuck Peck

Re: GARX 61916 and 67378 Lessees
finkfam98055
Thanks for your insight Richard and Tony. For the GARX 61916, I had glanced at the Jan. 1949 ORER that listed a GARX series from 10000 to 64999, but I should have been suspicious of such a broad range, plus there is no entry for the number of cars. I see now that the Apr. 1942 ORER breaks that broad range into smaller chunks and the 61916 number falls in one of the gaps. I can't imagine a different interpretation of the conductor's handwriting, but the correct number may have been 67916 as you suggested which would put it in the 67750-67999 range of the Rock Island cars that I understand would have still carried that herald in 1947. That range is also for RS and not RSM (meat) reefers which makes sense. You confirmed for me that it seems unlikely that GARX 67378 would have stenciling for any lessee in 1947 since it's an RS and not RSM reefer. Is it likely that it would have "Ventilated Refrigerator" stenciling like the Rock Island cars since the car numbers are within a few hundred of each other?

Early CB&Q hopper doors
Rupert & Maureen <gamlenz@...>
I'm trying to identify the discharge doors fitted to CB&Q hoppers built between 1926 and 1929. The first group of cars, numbered 190000-190499, was built by AC&F with the subsequent cars (190500-191749) being built at Galesburg as copies. Most later hoppers had Enterprise doors but I have been unable to identify the early ones. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Re: DL&W Boxcar Paint and praise
Schuyler Larrabee
Paul Tupaczewski, one of the conspirators on this car, believes that the "match" is Scalecoat II
Boxcar Red, SGL ----------------------------Tony can be as critical as he is knowledgeable. I respect those qualities. The ELHS could use Tony's quote as a pop-out inan ad. On behalf of everyone involved in this project, including Schuyler, I say thanks, Tony. This was a committeeeffort; Schuyler can run down the names and forward the praise. It wasn't an easy project as there were some issues along the way on both sides of the check-writing. I joined theproject late, and shared the lessons learned from the efforts of other groups. There are plenty of options for superdetail, but for out of the box the details are correct.forgotten. When the first samples arrived, the IM color in sunlight was so very close to the actual colors -- alwaysstick to standard mixes if possible. In flourescent light the difference was all but unoticeable. Critical to the look ofthese cars is the opaque white lettering, which the models have. The artwork and typefaces on these cars were unique. Theoriginal color was Glidden No.204 standard brown that had a maroon-ish quality in certain types of light. The IM color hasthe right look, and I suggested that future ELHS projects with IM use that same paint. Since these cars used acombination of ends, sides, roof and doors that that appeared only on a 250-car class, I'm hoping the ELHS later works with IMto produce the standard 1937 car that represents a class of cars numbering more than 1500. The newer 1955Billboard paint scheme was applied to just a few of the ELHS cars, and the numbers chosen for the models were chosen from thevery few photos of cars so painted in service. Interestingly, these later 1950s repaints were not done at DL&W's ownKeyser Valley Shops, but by carbuilders Magor or ACF, scalemarks C for Clifton or B or Berwick, respectively. Therewere subtle variations in the billboard placement and artwork that varied between home-shop and factory repaints, era andboxcar class, and these cars have it correct on both models. These are the first truly accurate renditions of thisbillboard on a model. finish? The lettering is so opaque that I'm afraid to try.<http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/> E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (7.0.0.508) Database version: 6.14120 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor-antivirus/
