Joe was around and taking notes on suggestions from all.....
....I found he was on top of things and not planning on fiddling with the basic things about the Naperville meet that made it so successful.... but willing to tweak details and add to it to insure that we (and more of us) will enjoy it in 2010 and beyond. I was very encouraged in talking to Joe as were a number of others who I compared notes with that had conversations with him. Tony,The G-70-16 is certainly similar, but it has a different end (look at the topmost and bottom ribs), including a wheeled hand brake, and lacks the little tie-down loops on the top chord of the sides. It's also a fixed-end car, thus lacking the heavy corner posts of the drop-end cars, and doesn't have the tall end sill of the G-70-8 and -12 cars. The Tangent model could certainly stand in for a G-70-16 but to my eye would be significantly different. This past weekend was the last PMS hosted by Sunshine Models. It will not be the last PMS in Naperville. It is my understanding that the gentleman who has hosted the Western Prototype Meet has stepped forward and will organize next years event. Hopefully we'll many more years of fun in Naperville. Sunshine Models, will for now, continue offering models and I believe will be present at next years event. Pierre Oliver

The G-70-12 cars had Kerrigan brake steps, which were a rectangular open grid similar to Apex Tri-Lok. In addition to coverage of these SP gondola cars in Tony's book, RP CYC Vol. 19 has a comprehensive 53-page article covering all prototype cars . . .Ed is correct, as photos in my book show. The other, very minor difference is that different draft gear was used in the two classes, and careful examination of the draft gear opening; in the car end will show the difference, but this is below the level of significance that any but the most meticulous modeler would recognize. I hope that Tangent will presently release a black G-70-8 too! Somehow "a work of art" is still a compliment while "a real piece of work" became an insult, some time ago. You know with these kids today... if they say a car is "bad" they mean "good"! (Sounds like a 1970 episode of "Here's Lucy"...) Scott Pitzer

Eldon, yes the new B&O model in the M53. If there are a ton of rivets on the other class of Tangent gon, I guess I'm glad I chose the RTR gondola then. I was just thinking of putting a row on each side to the side stakes. One doesn't thnk clearly Saturday morning in the sales room : )

Come to Trainfest in Milwaukee in a couple weeks and maybe sell me a couplekits <VBG> I also bought the new Tangent Gon. I was very tempted to buy the undec and order some of the Archer rivets to make a different class car. Anyone else have this idea? I had that same idea, but you should see all the rivets! I picked up my RP Cyc from Ed at the show which has an article on thesecars. I saw Ed presentation too, which gave me the idea. Are there decals that will work for these cars? You can do either PRR G31C or G31E using an undec and bashing the ends on the latter. Middle Division had several sets that could be used. The Champ sets are not so good. You could also use Al Westerfield's sets, with some mods. Elden Gatwood

Re: 46 ft. Flatcars?
joth1930s
Hello,
Regarding the Q. on the CPR 46' flat cars: Figure 192 is a plan for a CP car with straight side sills. The CPR built 800 46' flat cars between 1929 and 1938 starting with five-hundred CCF built 300000 through 300499 (the CPSIG website has a plan of this series built in 1929). 100 more were built in 1931 in the 300500- 300599 series. There is a photo of one of the last series of 46' cars (no. 300715) on the STMFC website which was part of the two-hundred car order built in August 1938 and numbered 300600-300799. Some cars cars of these series remained active until April 1988 having been re-numbered in 300900-300999 sereis. Jonathan McConathy

Bill Welch
I would like to thank Gary & Denis and Jon Cagle for expanding the offerings available to those of us who enjoy building models in 1/87. Martin, Al, Steve, and Ted were/are never going to be able to do everything we all want, given the diversity of railroads we love and the lack of standard car building practices. My hat is off to all of them for being willing to do business in such a niche area where I am sure much of it is a labor of love.

New Owner for Naperville Prototype Meet
Rhbale@...
Martin Lofton, who previously expressed plans to retire as sponsor of the
annual Sunshine Prototype Modelers Meet, has announced that an agreement has been reached with Joe D’Elia to take over the popular event held annually at the Holiday Inn in Naperville, Illinois. D’Elia, owner of A-Line, ProtoPower West and New Rail Models, has considerable experience in managing events and has for many years been a co-sponsor of the Western Prototype Modelers Meet held each year in Southern California. D’Elia told MRH he is committed to presenting the Naperville Meet with few, if any, recognizable changes. By agreement with Martin Lofton, the event will continue to be identified as the Sunshine Prototype Modelers Meet. A contract has also been signed by D’Elia with the Naperville Holiday Inn with the next meet scheduled for October 21 through 24, 2010. D’Elia said that a web site now under development would indicate all pertinent details of the meet including a list of the dates and hours of individual clinics. Although Martin Lofton and his wife Tricia will no longer be involved in managing future meets, they are expected to attend and promote Sunshine products. Perhaps Martin will finally have time to present a clinic at the popular event he launched eighteen years ago Richard Bale, Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine www.model-railroad-hobbyist.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Tangent G-70-12 for other classes
Lee Gautreaux
Tony,
It's been well established that the new Tangent AC&F gon is accurate for SP's G-70-12 class, but are there any significant differences between the G-70-12 and the -8 class? They appear to be identical designs with wood floors and drop ends. Also, I know that the G-70-16 class differs in steel floor vs. wood floor and the strapped ends. Are the any other differences that you can tell? Thanks, Lee A. Gautreaux - The Bayou Foamer http://www.railgoat.railfan.net/
