Charlie,

With his bad luck going east, perhaps Martin should reconsider coming
west again. We westerners greatly appreciate Martin and Sunshine Models'
great steam era / early transition freight car kits.

Tim, the short answer is, you can't. A few GATC builder's photos
survive here and there in private or museum collections, but (unlike
AC&F) GATC's own files went into the dumpster years ago.

I went to General American's corporate offices in the 1980s to see what they had. Nothing. I came away with a copy of their 50th anniversary self-published book and the names of several old employees to contact for their remembrances. - Al Westerfield

The problem is he has a lot of eastern road kits he would like to sell, also their grand kids live back in that area and don't forget they were on their way to see the grand kids over Thanksgiving when he got the food poisning. There is a 50/50 chance they will be out this way next month for a sales day in San Bernardino on March 6 and he has paid for his sales tables at Winterail in Stockton on March 13. He is also planning to be at the SFRH&MS convention in Denver in late July.

Maybe you should suggest to Martin to return to his West Coast swing, we

Well Martin called me this morning and he is snowed in at Wytheville, Va.
off I-81 and doesn't think they will be able to go any further. He says
there is over a foot of snow on the ground already with more comming and has
no idea when they will be able to get out of there.

I tried to interest Benn Coifman at Railfonts in it several years ago, and sent him photos showing all the letter variations I was aware of, but it appears he is not interested in doing the font. Maybe if there was a groundswell of interest from modelers he might do it .....

Photos of interest

Greg Martin

I thought I might share this with you all. It is a great little gallery of photos spanning our era and beyond. Great site.

http://www.westernrailimages.com/

One particular gallery of interest i the MP Gallery and especially page 11 and 12. This crew had a very special day.

There is also some good shots looking down onto some well weathered double board roofs, while the sides of the cars are rather clean.

Ejoy,

Greg Martin

I doubt many people will be corresponding with WM speed lettering or the flying Rio Grande fonts, but he did them and others that don't really lend themselves to correspondence or general text. If you just wanted to do the FGEX cars I might agree that it wouldn't be that hard to trace a photo such as those. But what about "BREWED FROM PURE ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPRING WATER USING THE FINEST MATERIALS PROCURABLE" or "FROM THE COOL BREEZY PLAINS OF TEXAS" and other statements on the sides of billboard reefers? Plus Mr. Welch is going to need the font for the chapter headings and subheadings in his forthcoming book.

And it's not ugly! <G>

I can see why; it's a pretty ugly typeface. One of the problems Mr. Coifmann faces is that he works the letterforms into a true font; complete with proper kerning and specifically adjusted "kerning pairs" (such as AV) so you can use the font to type correspondence if you wanted to. For our purposes you don't need a font, all you need is a graphic of the lettering as it is displayed on the car side. With the material in these three photos:

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-frt/fgex14815jpb.jpg
http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-frt/fgex14815jpc.jpg

You should be able to trace over the lettering in Coral Draw or whatever and come up with acceptable art for decals.

Charlie,

With his bad luck going east, perhaps Martin should reconsider coming west again. We westerners greatly appreciate Martin and Sunshine Models' great steam era / early transition freight car kits. While we may have nothing quite so wondrous as a Timonium Great Scale Model Train Show (as GTE's recent pitiful first attempt in Reno showed), we do have the Roseville CA International Railfair, plus a growing number of excellent RPM events.

Tell Martin and Tricia to stay safe and warm! Howard Zane's website is telling vendors that Sunday should be good weather and good sales, but Wytheville to beyond Baltimore is a long drive.

Warm regards,
