Looking for two Sunshine SS kits

I am looking for two Sunshine kits and wondering if anyone on this
list has examples they have decided not to build and would like to sell.

# 39.7 IGN/NOT&M 40-foot Howe Truss boxcar, wood door, indented
Dreadnaught end, Murphy radial roof

# 57.5 MILW 714000-717199 40-foot Howe Truss boxcar, steel door,
Dreadnaught ends; 1936-fifties complex tilted box decals

I have a duplicate kit # 57.2 Illinois Central 176000 series 40'
single sheathed boxcar kit I can use in trade if desired.

Exactly, and in fact, the SP cars did have AB-1-B gear.

I'd imagine that the same brake gear could very well have been used. Troop sleepers used two sets of Wabco AB-1-B brake gear. It is similar in appearance to freight AB gear, the only difference being that the control valve was fitted for graduated release to work in passenger trains.

After the discussions of mini-kits, how about having a mini-kit folder in the files section where members can add information for building specific cars out of different parts? There are so many options for existing kits and it is difficult to keep track of so many different railroads. The format would be the poster's choice, but it could be as simple as a sort of bibliography. Generic example:

Intermountain xxxx reefer
Stan's xxxx ends
Tahoe TPx trucks
Champ xxx decals
Sunshine Southwest reweigh decals

This could be an immense help for many of us with, in my case, a CB&Q layout in the midwest, but naturally needing cars from all over.

I would not rule out resin kits at Trainfest, Sylvan has been there
for the last two years or more.

I for one would look for any of the resin manufacturers and would definitely buy something from Westerfield, Funaro, Sunshine,
Speedwich, or any other company that would be there.

I make ever effort to buy something from any vendor that I would like to see at this show again. Maybe I am a rare breed, but consider participating next year please. I can only make on or two big show per year and this show is one of them that I do schedule into my "must
do's."

But I also have the NMRA national convention in Milwaukee to add to
my schedule for next summer. I would consider that as a must attend
too.

Google Books and freight cars

In my research on the FGE/WFE/BRE companies I have managed to find what I would characterize as some highly specialized and technical books that have been digitized as a part of the ambitious "Google Books" project which, is scanning the collections of some of the largest and most important libraries in the land. Although I assume some of you know of this effort, others may not. As I know some of us can be a like "a dog to a bone" with some aspects of our beloved freight cars, folks may want to see what they can come up with. Have fun!

I checked one of my P2K tank car kits and found that it does seem to have a 1/8" boss for mounting the trucks, much like Athearn's, so you will have to enlarge the bolster hole on the (old) TMW trucks. I would suggest using either a round file or a #30 drill (.1285").

I'll take this opportunity to announce that I've made some changes to my truck tooling. For one, the hole in the truck bolster is now bigger and solves the above problem. The hole now measures about .130" diameter, which matches that on Accurail trucks.

Also, I have read on this list that the tops of Dalman sideframes were hitting the body bolsters on Red Caboose X29/ARA box cars. If RC had done their tooling accurately, there would have been enough clearance. But since they didn't, I have lowered the Dalman sideframes a little bit so that now, with a washer to raise the body for proper coupler height, I think things will be OK. I don't feel that the lower sideframes are noticable.

I hope these changes help.

Or, do I modify the trucks by reaming them out to fit shoulder? It appears
to be somewhere between 1/8" and 9/64", but I am loath to buy a special
drill size just to ream out two trucks!
What do you do? Any problems using the Proto trucks on other cars? I think I
remember using them on a F&C CV auto car successfully...

Thank-you very much for the info. The '43 ORER lists 359 CP cars that match the number range. The description does not mention 8 hatches, but it does specify overhead ice containers, and the inside length is only 2'5" less than the outside length (no end bunkers). CN lists 200 cars with the same size and notations.

GTW does not list any similar cars, so these look to be pretty rare during WWII.
