Todd and Clark, In the distance is what appears to be an L&N PS-1 boxcar, probably 5141. These were delivered in March 1952. Hope this helps. Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

Malcolm I use Ca to attach the rungs. I hold the jig downward when applied so the CA does not run back into the jig attaching stile to jig. As they say, “ Ask me how I know?” And, to date no problem with the CA failing on the rungs. Soldering as you did can be used.

Hi Clark,
I think you are right about the roofs not all being replaced. I've attached (I hope) a photo from somewhere online that is of the NYC / B&A yard in Boston with lots of NYC boxcars, including both kinds made by Westerfield. There are a variety of roofs, including the original. I believe the photo dates to the early or mid-1950s. Todd Sullivan

Because of the number of Yarmouth kits I acquired I eventually broke down a got one the fret bending tools for the stiles so now I had to assemble ladders. I went with soldering. Years ago I bought one of the soldering pads offered by Micro-Mark designed to hold parts while soldering. The pad becomes it’s own jig in a sense as the rungs poke through the holes in the stiles and into the pad. The ladder can be completely assembled out of the loose rungs and stiles on he pad and then a quick touch of the soldering iron at each rung attaches the rungs into a rigid structure.

The door, pulling loops and the roof and running board may need to be changed as most of the NYC cars had been re-roofed with either straight or diagonal panels and all(ish) some iteration of patch panels by the early/mid 50's. You also need to consider the layout of the brake components and remove the plate protecting the 'triple' valve. If you want NYC it may be easier to buy a Westerfield kit and replace the roof, which is what I will do with mine ......eventually, sometime, maybe.
The last three words are unacceptable...Built them! ; )) Many of us have nothing better to do anyway.... I struggled with this, it's like a old auto. Do you restore it as was, or do you modify it? I'm more in the restore camp. It came down to resale value. I believe the NYC version would be more desirable. So I built it as NYC, one side is decaled as I write. I understand that the roofs were replaced, but this model in one piece and very, very well done. I model 1948-50 so hopefully not all were replaced by then? CW Propst

Thanks for sharing your technique. Do you use CA to glue the rungs to stiles?

Barry,
Due to the sheer numbers it’s seemingly as necessary to have the NYC and subsidiary roads variants as it is the vaunted X29. They were everywhere.

Tools for photo etched ladder assembly
Lester Breuer
I am in the process of building a resin freight car kit that contains photo etched ladders that need to be assembled. Since my post on ladders I have found and am using new tools and jig to assemble them. If you are interested in the new tools and jig I use to assemble the ladders, photos and write up are now available on my blog I have to share photos and writeup of modeling projects on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company. If would like to take a look please do at the following link: http://mnrailroadcab100.blogspot.com/ Lester Breuer

Time to thin the herd sale! This link will take you to my first pass of cars for sale, both kits and RTR. Take a look and email with your interests. These are boxed up so bear with me as I dig out the gems. Now this is my first attempt to use a file on a Google Drive and I pray that I got it right. If you cannot open it, email me OFF LIST and I will send a list to you in either Excel or PDF formats (please specify). Thanks for your consideration. Allen Cain
