GN had at least one boxcar with "grab iron extensions":
GN 29001 40', 20' opening Also having grab iron extensions were: SAL 20200-20209 40', 20' opening And now for something a little different: MILW 16800 50', 30' opening Not only were the grabs mounted on extensions, but so were the side ladders. (all dimensions approximate) Ed Edward Sutorik

Out of the 20-something photos I have of these cars, only one (14241) has the large initials. I believe very few of the fifty-footers received this lettering compared to the forty-footers since there were more classes of 40' cars. Don DeLay

Soo, definitely. I don't think any GN cars had this feature.

Ed, The NYC had several enclosed Shay locomotives for use on their West Side Freight Line (pulling freight cars, mandatory content). They have been written about a number of times in the railfan press. Here is photo of one that came up at the top of an internet search: https://www.railarchive.net/nyccollection/nyc7189.htm . That said. I saw a NYC locomotive numbered 1904, in the street scenes. I am only slightly intrigued, being a Northwestern kind of guy. But yet. Pretty damn cool. Anyone of a more northeastern bent have thoughts on this locomotive? Is it a Shay? And, by the way, I am VERY impressed at the quality of this film. Hello Claus,
many thanks for sharing! Interesting video - and indeed fascinating being with the real sound!
Also the scene in Manhattan with the officer managing the traffic - just great!
Many greetings

Some may enjoy this video - the title sez it all: "The New York Central in 1928-1929"
At times the camera is on the roof of a freight car, giving us good view of - you guessed it - freight car roofs.
These is a short but nice segment showing one of what was then probably brand new NYC container service in New York City street trackage.
Plenty of freight cars to go around!
Note that despite the date, this is the real sound from the scene being photographed, not just something the movie makers tacked on.

Re: SP&S Large Reporting Marks—Date of Introduction
Allan Smith
Of all the photos I have been able to download from the internet, I found SP&S 11242 Date V-1-58 Straight SP&S and 11287 Date v-5-58 straight SP&S. These are the earliest photos I have found with the large SP&S, both with the straight SP&S. All the photos I have seen of the slant SP&S are 1960 or later. That doesn't mean there aren't any out there, it means I haven't found any. Hope this helps some.. Al Smith Sonora CA

Re: SP&S Large Reporting Marks—Date of Introduction
The 14000 to 14499 were built in 1957 at St Cloud and did not have the billboard letters originally. In some cases the name to the right of the door was repainted with the large letters and the rest of the lettering include the oval herald was the same. But most of them seemed to keep the original lettering up to BN. BRANCHLINE offered this (accurate) HO scale model as kit #1106 Tim O'

Re: Grab Irons Extensions
Charlie Vlk
Sorry if I missed the reply to Bob’s queston…the Plug Door in the fully open position would interfere with the normal inboard mounting location of the grab irons…so they overlap the ends to clear. Charlie Vlk
There must be a good reason for this...so what is the reason?
