Photos of B&O M-8 box cars
Good Morning Fellow Shut-ins...
I am working on an overall history of the 21,000 class M-8 box cars built for the B&O, B&OSW, and P&W. The majority were built by Pullman as documented by Eric Neubauer. They were in service from 7-1896 to 1929 with original wood underframe. About 12,400 were rebuilt to steel center sills, M-8B, -8C, or underframe, M-8A, as well as US Safety Appliance Standards over 1912-1921. The last of these, #185901, M-8C, is listed in the 1-1940 B&O Summary of Equipment. These rebuilds were accomplished by the B&O and several commercial builders. It would be very helpful to me if some of you might share some photo scans and or point me to sources for same. Equipment diagrams indicate "iron roof". What did that look like? An additional 60 of M-8 dimensions were built as B&OSW 17700-17759 with double side doors over door openings of 10-0 and 10-8. What did these look like? They were renumbered to B&O 93000-93059 and rebuilt to steel center sills etc. as B&O 190600-190651. Some were also rebuilt to M-8B. Advance thanks for any help you can share with me, Eric Lombard At home in Homewood, IL

Model: CB&Q "Bomber Boxcar" A model photo from the NAPM Model Railroad Club: https://www.flickr.com/photos/napmltd/41672943110/ Caption: "In 1942 the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy modified some of their 50' automobile boxcars to carry wings of B-26 Marauder bombers to an Army Air Corps assembly plant near Omaha. The CB&Q shops built 26" high side extensions and reattached the old roof to the raised sides. The wings were loaded and unloaded through the hinged doors on the 'A' end of the boxcar. After the war these cars were used for high cube, lightweight loads such as appliances and furniture. The cars fared poorly in their new assignment — those types of loads weren't as robust as airplane wings — with cargo damage often the result of excess sway. Eventually the boxcars were put into general service alongside normal-height 50' cars." Does anyone have a prototype photo or link to a prototype photo? How many cars did the CB&Q modify? Thanks. Not to high jack this thread but the NYC had a very similar car to this one for B-29 production as well. If you have Amazon Prime Video search "B29 Bomber Films" and a short movie will pop up with that name. It has some excellent views of the car including the end door which has eluded many researchers.

In the fwiw column, the Pullman library has haskell and barker drawings for Mather stock, auto, refrigerator, vegetable, and beef cars. I didn't see one for straight box, but it may well be there.

CB&Q "Bomber Boxcar"
Andy Carlson
Maybe it is still there--20 years ago I was in Scotts Bluff NE. and adjacent to a small rail yard, a grain mill had an on-site storage structure which was a surviving CB&Q extended height box car still in Q paint. I seem to remember that it had evidence of being active into the 60's but I failed to take any pictures. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

The AHM roof does resemble a the flat-panel version of SRECO's steel roof. But the seam caps should extend to the edge of the roof.

not to rain on anyoes parade, but consider what the chinese had to do, one they figured out what they were dealing with, quarentined a city.of millions, quarentined half a province, daily mandatory randon screening, and by some trump miracle, all if this is not going to transpire, according to the exalted one, this is going to get lot worse, before long, we don't even have enough test kits for the actual sick, this is not going to disappear overnight or in weeks, don't be surprised when it does get worse, and definitely don't make any plans for this year, mandatory quatentine is just around the corner mel perry
