Re: Seatrain Ships
Doug Pillow
Back in1971 I was an Able Seaman Cardeckman on the Seatrain Texas. We were running New York(Edgewater NJ) TO San Juan Puerto Rico. Each cardeckman had a deck of railroad cars and one track on the main deck. Each watch you had to check the chocks on each car and the turnbuckles on the tiedownson on each car. They were tightened as needed. The cars were winched to the main elevator for hoisting to main deck where they were craned off. A very interesting ship, she was old but stout built pre World War Two. Doug

The Bx-44 had five panels per side, making it not right for the CB&T model. The Branchline car is much closer.
Interestingly enough, although this class came with those intermediate Youngstown doors with the wide panels (and I went out of my way to equip my Branchline cars with those Southwest Scale doors), most or all of this class had the doors replaced in later years with a newer Youngstown door much closer to the door in the Branchline kit. Just as a footnote, the prototype photo is of a class Bx-44 Class boxcar, not a Class Bx-48 which is what Brian and Andy have referenced. The CB&T Shops model is lettered as a Bx-48, so their comments pertain to that class, not the Bx-44.

When I was creating my freight car roster for my 1957 layout Richard gave me some data on these cars. I have pasted that below. Note I have not yet looked into what reworkings are needed.

ATSF AAR 40’ Box Panels ?
Andy Carlson
Hi Lester- On the Steam Era Freight Car Web Site (different from this io group) Ed Hawkins has data for almost all post war AAR 40' box cars and has data for these cars, but I can say that the Santa Fe was one of three RRs which had 40' 10'6" IH 6' single door 12 riveted panel boxcars. Santa Fe, Denver & Rio Grande and the Great Northern. The Rio Grande had straight lower side sills (think "Cookie cutter"). The Santa Fe Bx-48? box cars had the one year only Youngstown "upside down" 6/6/5 improved Youngstown steel door, built in 1946 which this model has. For a 1946 car, 4/4 improved Dreadnaught ends and rectangular Stanray roof are correct. Your car is remarkably close to being correct, though I can not say if the ATSF straight line map would be correct for this particular class. Andy Carlson Ojai CA

My question not having any reference data on the Santa Fe. Were any cars produced with the number of panels the model has? Any info. on prototype cars appreciated. Need color pic of Gold Bond wrapper
Jim King
I’m finishing modifying an IM AAR bulkhead flat to represent B&O’s P-31c (an extra welded gusset will backdate this 1955) and need a color pic of a car with Gold Bond wrapper over plaster board (sheet rock). These were bright orange with black lettering and white cardboard strips under the steel banding. I’m looking for any bulkhead flat with this type of load, not B&O-specific. The completed model will be featured in upcoming B&OHS Modeler issues (2 parts).
Please reply off-list if you can help. Thanks.

Re: Seatrain Ships

All- Popular Science and Popular Mechanics are a source of many good railroad (freight car) images and articles. Fascinating look into the past when people were interested in how things worked and doing things with their hands. Quite a contrast to today’s “Popular Science” which is more of a catalog for Sharper Image with opinion pieces on technical and scientific issues. Charlie Vlk

The state "full crew" laws were hilariously written so poorly that these "cabeese"

could be placed anywhere in the train. The Wabash had similar cars and would just put people inside for the ride. They had nothing to do but hold on for dear life.

What the?? Tony, the letters were orange-yellow and the rest was black, with an orange-yellow border - just as Bill Welch describes. This was done nicely on Proto 2000 B-50-22 cars. Photos of the style are extremely rare! :-( The style did not last long, as seen in the photo of T&NO 70287. Black on yellow was much more visible than yellow over black. Tim O'Connor
