The previous picture does show a house nearby. Not sure if the railroad would approve of this use of it's property though!

Considering the tire marks right in front of the box, it MIGHT be a mail box for someone living immediately to the right. They may have decided the extant post was superior to the one they'd have to install for themselves.
Whatever it was, I would say the tire marks indicate frequent motor vehicle visits. Ed Edward Sutorik

Very interesting photos. Between us, five SP transfer cabooses, and all different. That's way cool. While these beasties were more common in the East, I have only seen two more in the Left Coast -- Alameda Belt Line had one that looked like an outhouse on a raft (a steam-era car, AFAIK), and more recently the Yolo Shortline had an ex-MKT car of fairly modern lines. Mark Vaughan set E-1. I painted this over 20 years ago and may have applied the wrong set of dimensional data since I didn't know then as much as I know now. The set covers a number of different cars. Set E-2 was for postwar repaints and some later cars. Tim O

Fred Jansz asked: "Bought this OMI Wabash auto car and wonder if someone knows if there are decals available for this car?" Tim O'Connor replied: "Mark Vaughan decals - stocked by Des Plaines Hobbies." Somewhat surprisingly, he didn't do a specific set for these automobile cars. Checked the manufacturer website this morning - there are overarching sets for boxcars, but not the SS automobile boxcars. A check of the DPH online website for Mark Vaughn Decals doesn't return any WAB automobile decals either. You can check with Funaro, who will sell decals upon request. As always, consult prototype photos. Ben Hom

Of even more importance, you got a photo of a rare SP transfer caboose. I don't have Tony's SP caboose book, so maybe he could comment more on this car and others, especially if any were in use during our period of interest. The only one I knew of was SP 1, a car with a slightly larger cabin, that served in the Roseville Yard near the end of caboose operations. Yours Aye, Garth Groff

What Is This Box? In the photo on this link there is a box attached to the crossing sign: http://lists.railfan.net/erielackphoto.cgi?erielack-10-10-19/X7818.jpg Could this be a waybill box for the (possible) spur or siding that is to the left of the picture? Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA

I'm sure it depends on the era. Modern steel devices like this one were built postwar. I know the GN had a similar device as this one in Gavin Yard. Tim O'

Several of you responded "load shifter" and a Google search of this term with the term "railroad" revealed this to be a common term. Thank you.
Unfortunately, the Google search produced no photos. Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA
