Film response is not linear across all wavelengths. As a consequence, color balance may look good but individual colors may still be off. In addition, the Shorpy photo has undergone significant editing, so, the freshly washed car may or may not
be accurately depicted ;) Regards Bruce

Re: Santa Fe Reefer Icing Folio
NO WAY did the Santa Fe run 62 hour produce trains from Bakersfield to Chicago,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
as the caption claims. I recall a TRAINS magazine article in the 1950's that followed a potato train from the San Joaquin valley to Chicago - it took over 100 hours, perhaps 120 hours. I read the article 50 years ago, but I remember being struck by how SLOWLY the "expedited" train ran - But to be sure, it ran faster than other freight traffic of that era. Tim O'Connor

Spen, It's a Jack Delano photo from his 1943 trip for OWI on the Santa Fe. I'm not saying the freshly washed PFE car wasn't orange, just that to my eye, it was less so than I would have expected. PRR project groups, X37 and X38
Folks,
The PRR Project Group (https://groups.io/g/PRRPro) is starting project #33 today, the PRR’s X37 and X38 classes of boxcar. For those of you not familiar with PRRPro, it is a group designed to help
encourage modelers to build PRR models. The group is not a “follow the leader” type of clinic, but is intended to be more a of CO-OP, with members contributing photos, comments and questions from their builds. While the majority of builders on the X37/38 project
will likely be workin on Sunshine and F&C kits in HO scale, all scales are welcome! As always, posts to PRRPro on past projects are absolutely allowed, but posts on any project other than one the group has done or is doing are strictly not allowed.

Soo Line Box Car 45398
Lester Breuer
I have upgraded a plastic Front Range Soo Line steel box car 45398. The upgrade included replacing running boards, seven rung ladders with plastic eight rung ladders on the sides and seven rung ladders on the ends to match the prototype ladders in photos. And, underbody rework. If you are interested in viewing photos of finished car and writeup of the build, you can on my blog I started to share photos and writeup of modeling projects on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company. If you would like to take a look please do at the following link:

Not at that directory (note, when I have the same question, I usually backtrack to the directory the file is in, in this case http://www.foxvalleydivision.org/fvd2016/imagesfvd2016/clinicdata/,
which has a nice listing of clinics.) Regards Bruce

Bowser Parts Run - an offer.
I apologize for the cross-posting but I wanted to get this out to several lists. On a few lists we’ve discussed parts and how oftentimes shipping is much more than the parts. This coming Saturday (July 6th) I am making a run to English’s Hobby Shop (Bowser) in Montoursville. Later in July I will be attending the St. Louis RPM for the first time. I’m willing to pick up parts and deliver to St Louis RPM if anyone needs 1 or 2 things. My intent is to help those who may need 1 or 2 things from the Bowser parts catalog, trucks, a cal-scale brass part etc etc. My intent is not to pick up 6 H21 hoppers is circle keystone and 6 more in shadow keystone. If you have a request like that you can justify the shipping costs.
Now the shelves in the back are known to have interesting things on them so I’ll entertain looking for some older items. Email me OFF LIST
If anyone wants to take me up on the offer email me OFF LIST at prrk41361_at_yahoo_dot_com. Please use BOWSER Parts in the subject so I can sort email. Please include part number and a description at a minimum.
Some additional answers to questions that may follow.
Lastly, remember to contact me OFF LIST, I don’t want to annoy 3 list owners, the food in the RealSTMFC jail is horrible, and the PRRPRO jail food is almost as bad.

I do agree that we need a LOT more weathering! At least in the war era. I really liked the contrast on the ART reefer where the brakies have rubbed off the grime behind the grab irons. The first PFE looks like it could have been dipped in a wash of India ink. I too get a 404 error. And Shorpy directly is often freezing, so I haven't gotten to that image directly, but I've been close. That could be my internet connection, so I might try tomorrow.

Wartime reefers on Cajon
John Barry
In one of the few instances where I would point you at Shorpy rather than the original at the Library of Congress is a retouched version of Jack Delano's color photo of a UP Challenger at Alray with a string of reefers, hatches open for ventilation. https://www.shorpy.com/files/images/1a34754u2.jpg The original scan at LOC has a crack/tear that runs diagonally across most of the photo https://cdn.loc.gov/service/pnp/fsac/1a34000/1a34700/1a34754v.jpg. You can see where it has been repaired in the Shorpy with a slight distortion of the corner adjacent to the NP Monad on the second car. In both versions, the color balance seems "right" to me based on the shed and station sign. That said, I'm surprised by how "yellow" the 2nd PFE car appears, I would have expected a more orange hue. Perhaps it faded through exposure and washings. It must be on it's first trip after a pass through the wash line as it has no weathering. Contrast the ART behind it with the heavy coat of grime and wear around the grabs. Also of note in the 1943 image, is that both of the visible PFE's have the UP Overland Herald, even though the "plain" color Herald became the standard in 42. Further evidence that the clean car was recently washed and not repainted. The other interesting observation is that only 40% of the visible cars are PFE in what looks like a GFX block originating with the UP in SoCal: PFE, NP, PFE, ART, BREX. It looks as if the order "pooling" the refrigerator car fleet has been fully implemented here.
