I too get a 404 error. And Shorpy directly is often freezing, so I haven't gotten to that image directly, but I've been close. That could be my internet connection, so I might try tomorrow.

Wartime reefers on Cajon
John Barry
In one of the few instances where I would point you at Shorpy rather than the original at the Library of Congress is a retouched version of Jack Delano's color photo of a UP Challenger at Alray with a string of reefers, hatches open for ventilation. https://www.shorpy.com/files/images/1a34754u2.jpg The original scan at LOC has a crack/tear that runs diagonally across most of the photo https://cdn.loc.gov/service/pnp/fsac/1a34000/1a34700/1a34754v.jpg. You can see where it has been repaired in the Shorpy with a slight distortion of the corner adjacent to the NP Monad on the second car. In both versions, the color balance seems "right" to me based on the shed and station sign. That said, I'm surprised by how "yellow" the 2nd PFE car appears, I would have expected a more orange hue. Perhaps it faded through exposure and washings. It must be on it's first trip after a pass through the wash line as it has no weathering. Contrast the ART behind it with the heavy coat of grime and wear around the grabs. Also of note in the 1943 image, is that both of the visible PFE's have the UP Overland Herald, even though the "plain" color Herald became the standard in 42. Further evidence that the clean car was recently washed and not repainted. The other interesting observation is that only 40% of the visible cars are PFE in what looks like a GFX block originating with the UP in SoCal: PFE, NP, PFE, ART, BREX. It looks as if the order "pooling" the refrigerator car fleet has been fully implemented here. Re: Duryea underframe resin parts photo
John Barry
Tom, The original Duryea design had "open" cross bearers as shown in the photo on Gene's proto 48 blog https://www.proto48.org/images/articles/art07-07-1500.jpg. The Bx-26 class built in 1936 and the Bx-27 built in 1937 were delivered in that configuration. At some time prior to the Bx-34 class constructed in 1940, the design was "improved" with "closed" pressed steel cross bearers. John Dobyne speculates that it was due to a structural weakness in the "open" frames. This seems likely, as at some point, Santa Fe welded steel plates between the upper and lower pieces of the cross bearers on the Bx-26 & 27. The Speedwitch kit correctly models the fiddly bits of the "early" aka "open" underframe with separate parts for the vertical angle irons that you the modeler add during assembly. The Sunshine has these cast integrally with the rest of the cross bearer. Several plastic manufacturers have also produced models with Duryea underframes. The Tangent riveted gondola has excellent extended coupler pockets that are sometimes available as part of separate sprues. They offer a quick and easy way to improve the look of a Bx-27 or 34 without replacing the rest of the underframe. Athearn makes a very nice 50' "closed" Duryea underframe that is under their 50 foot Santa Fe ice reefer. That can be cut and spliced to work for a complete late 40' underframe. In the FWIW dept. we *should* have the Middleton Car
drawings. St. Louis *MAY* have the AC&F drawings.
We haven't really looked for anything Middleton for a couple of years,
might be entertaining to look.
We have early (1904-1909) P&R drawings for box cars, gondolas & hoppers - those were all Standard Steel tho. At 09:21 AM 6/30/2019, vapeurchapelon wrote: 60600-60799 May-Sep by Middletown Car Works Bob Webber

The hopper on the right is is one of 1100 PRR class GL built by AC&F on Lot 2571, presumably because Pressed Steel couldn't get their orders out the door fast enough. AC&F also built 300 GL for Lines West on Lot 2856. David Thompson

The same link was posted over on the B&M group, where Scott Whitney subsequently claimed ownership of the Dropbox account (part of his NMRO operation).
Almost all of the same images have been released on a CD by a company called WLHG out of Methuen, MA (purchased mine through ebay). Those images have a WLHG watermark (and are all in sepia tones). As to any IP or copyright issues, or whom to credit for the photos, well.... Dave Parker Riverside, CA

Thanks, Bob. You made a happy discovery of a collection that someone assembled in a dropbox folder. Thanks for sharing it. There are some photos that shed light on the construction details and builder of some of the cars included and those sorts of small bits of the bigger picture are always gratefully received. Eric

Dave, FYI there is an undecorated Nickle Plate version on Ebay. It would save you the hassle of striping it and maybe an easier process to disassemble. Kind Regards Bryian Sones Union Pacific Prototype Modeler Murrieta, CA
