Paint Scheme for Swift 6700 Series Reefers
Nelson Moyer
I’m building two Sunshine 6700 series reefers, and I only have two photos of these cars, both in black and white. SRLX 6723 is painted in the yellow banner scheme, and it’s clear that the underframe cover plates and sill steps are yellow, while the rest of the underframe is black. SRLX 6714 is painted in the red scheme, and it’s not possible to determine if the color plates and sill steps are red or black. I can’t tell if the end sills are red or black. I’d appreciate information about the red paint scheme for this car and any color photos available.

Wow! That is simply beautiful modeling at its best, a “role model”. The only simple improvement that comes directly to mind would be the replacement of the “gigantic" couplers with the Accumate Protos with their close-to-scale head and accurate striker/striker distance.

The Morning Sun Books eBook bundle, Open Top Loads – Flatcar and Gondola Color Portfolio, Volume 1 & 2, have at least ten photos of open top coil loads in addition to many closed top coil cars, structural steel loads, and many other types of loads. You can buy and download the eBook for $19.99, and while you’re at it, you may as well get the bundle of Volumes 3 & 4. The photos in these two eBooks will provide all the information you need to model virtually (no pun intended) any open top load.

Re: L&N 18979
The car paint date is stenciled 3-32 (hidden in this photo, but visible in others of the same car load) and the photo is from June 8, 1932 no idea why that stencil was put up there

I agree with Dennis. L&N in later years had a paint code in the far upper left that would include the paint used or shop code that repainted the car. Curt Fortenberry

Steel running boards for PFE R-70-2
peteraue
A good friend wants to modernize his Sunshine kits # 25.1/2/3 and put Apex Trilock running boards on his R-70-2 reefers. He asked me to provide him with custom photo-etched RBs with accurate spacing to match the ribs on the roof. There will be a very limited number of extra parts for others. Please raise your hand if you want them. $ 5 each plus shipping. Delivery time approximately 3 months. First come, first serve.

Cut some styrene sheet of the proper thickness into strips of the appropriate width and roll them into coils. Use something round of the proper diameter for the center hole to roll them around.

The car to the left is one of Southern's handful of 1905 Common Design hoppers (possibly 285027 according to the chalk mark), SOU 285000-285149 (ex CNO&TP 19250-19399) or SOU 321000-321599 (ex AGS 14000-14599). https://exploreuk.uky.edu/catalog/xt7n8p5v9x1t_11_2 David Thompson

More like 1916: "SU" just means "steel underframe", and isn't really a Southern Ry. car designation (from what I can tell, they didn't have any, just engineering drawing designations which were far longer that two characters). And car 150555 here matches the later 1920s cars within a couple of inches (except inside dimensions, of course). Ray Breyer Elgin, IL

Are there good quality prints available of this? I find this an artistic image.
