Previous responses (including some dating back to 2004) have covered this; however, here are several other things to consider: - Bolster design changed over the lifetime of these trucks, with the Red Caboose trucks representing an earlier version and the Bowser trucks representing later trucks. - Bowser charges a flat shipping fee of $9.95. Consider bundling your order with other items if you order directly to amortize the shipping. - Additionally, Bowser included these trucks as stand-ins for AAR cast sideframe ("Bettendorf") trucks in non-PRR kits, particularly ACF covered hoppers, so you can rob trucks from those kits as you'll need to replace them anyway. - Finally, consider the Kadee trucks with view blocks (to minimize the Ovechkin effect) for open cars as they'll add weight for tracking. (If you go that route for the Bowser hoppers and gons, you can then reuse those trucks for house cars). Ben Hom

Modeling a ATSF Bx-11 rod braces

I am working on two Westy Classics, ATST Bx-11 and Bx-12 with raised roof. The 1955 photo I have of a Bx-11 shows the corner rods still in place. I wanted these to have relief or stand away for the side so I used SS tubing, .012 wire held on with the very small Yarmouth PE eyebolts. They eyebolts are small enough they can barely be seen and will disappear when the model is painted. I like the effect. Thanks to my friend Peter Aue for the very small eyebolts

Kadee has been converting their trucks to the HGC plastic. I think their priority has been to first convert the trucks for their RTR freight cars. Give Sam a ring and find it if they will be bringing out the 2D-F8 trucks in HGC. Meanwhile a tiny sliver of black styrene glued to the back side of the metal trucks will get rid of the "see through" appearance of the metal trucks. My gripe with the metal trucks is how poorly they roll. I replace the wheels with Reboxx wheelsets and they roll just fine. The HGC trucks roll very well. Tim O'Connor

The 8 rung ladders are probably there because they were an option, added to the Branchline kits for prototypes that had the 8 rung. The regular side and end detail sprues had 7 rung ladders, along with the side and end grabs, tackboards, etc..

It's a beautiful model right out of the box but, no sooner had I begun the weathering process than I broke one of the fragile corner sill steps. Santa Fe modeler friend Peter Aue offered to make a new set of etched brass replacements and, after breaking two more of the sill steps, they came in handy. (These are now available as Yarmouth Model Words part YMW-220). One improved detail often leads to another, and I soon found myself carving away major parts of the brake detail and replacing it with brass wire, clevises (Tichy #8021) and brake chain (A-Line #29219). Original hoses were replace with Hi-Tech details 22" hoses, with new brackets fashioned from brass strap stock. Still need to paint the new parts, install semi-scale wheel sets, apply warning placards, and reattach part of the valve I knocked off on the far left dome. Weathering to follow. What began as a simple weathering job became—owing to my clumsiness—so much more. Cheers! Michael Gross On the road - Lake Tahoe, NV

I think this has been discussed before, probably more than once. The only way I know to acquire the RC version is to stumble into an older kit (or RTR?) that came with them.

Tim you may be correct. But as one who has worked with research libraries who claim “ownership” of photos, so I can use the images in a publication, I know that if I was to freely disperse that image, I may not be able to use images from that research library in the future. In a similar vein if we all started posting the images we purchased from Bob’s Photos, he might stop bringing them to shows ending a tremendous resource for us all.

It is with great pleasure that I must act to terminate all threads regarding UP Big Boy 4014 and its return to life. I mean, who would have thought…However, …face it guys, 4014 is not a freight car. OTOH, I have to say that 4014 led many frt cars during its first life and continues to do so today [ I have ruled that a baggage car can be considered to be a frt car ]
Of course, a comment about a steam era freight car is certainly appropriate. And, of course, a comment about 4014 and a steam era frt car in the same message would be acceptable. Probably.

Santa Fe purchased 3000 50' boxes between 1909 and 1930: Class Blt Orig 1929 Fe-K 1909 500 462 Fe-K 1910 500 476 Fe-M 1910 500 479 Fe-Q 1924 500 499 Fe-R 1926 500 498 Fe-S 1928 500 500 Fe-U 1930 500 The DS Fe-K and M had the four fishbelly underframe members and became the core for the "whale belly" steel 50' rebuilds the Santa Fe began converting in 1936 with only 3 surviving as wood sheathed cars to the end of WWII. The Fe-Q-R-S were similarly converted starting in 1940. The Fe-S to 50 Fe-21 single door (SD) cars in 1940, 200 DD Fe-22 in 41, and 249 DD Fe-23 mostly in 41 with the last few by 53. The Fe-R the SD Bx-40, and the Fe-Q the DD Fe-25. The Fe-U's had their aux doors sealed to become SD Bx-35 in 1940 except for 17 engine cars that were converted in 1943.
