Once installed, it's a simple matter to install the correct roof trim on the ends.

The Central Valley NP Stock Car roof is too wide as a relict of a decision which Jack Parker made in the preliminary design of the stock car. He felt that if made wider, it would allow the cars to make tight radiuses, and perhaps with other perceived reasons.

The car roof needs to be narrowed enough to fit correctly on the RC reefer, and the 1/8" is from memory. I suggest narrowing it exactly to fit. That is what dial calipers are a great tool to have. Fortunately narrowing a curved roof has the joint hidden from the running board. The joint where the two halves bond together will not be tangent. I suppose that a bit of sanding may fix this little problem, but it is not visible with the running board, but you will know!

Another thing--lucky for anyone working on this kitbash, the modifications to get the ends to fit the new roof is made easier in that 0.010" styrene end fascias cover the gaps which an imperfect fitting leaves behind. Don't forget the Accurail fishbelly under frame!

Maybe Dan Smith can comment on the conversion, as he is saw Jerry Glow's work in person before Jerry left California for the land of heat and humidity.

I am no expert on this project, I m simply passing on the ideas as shared with Dave Koester who was the original person who came up with the idea. He told me that the finished NP reefer is close to being accurate, but I think that it would fail the Byron Rose test.

The problems with Tichy PFE decals far extend past their being too thick (you can feel the ink with your finger nail).

Tichy PFE decals have lettering that is the wrong size and shape - some too big, some too small.  The numbers are the wrong size, and their shape is nowhere near what PFE (and SP and UP) used.  The UP medallions are the wrong shape and style.

Compare lettering to the SPH&TS painting & lettering book, or new Microscale sets 87-501 or 60-501.  Compare medallions to the book or Microscale 87-414 or MC-4021.
Tichy's PFE artwork is just not accurate - or even close.

Tichy ought to try producing decals for actual raised lettering applied to the prototype,
for example for steam locomotive smokebox number plates. Something about turning a pig into
a purse comes to mind...

This is part of a discussion on the CB&Q Group about car routing. What caught my eye was the mention about revenue divisions between railroads being confidential. Seems to make good business sense.

Fred Crissey stated,

"Railroads divided revenue amongst themselves and these agreements were confidential. When I was in the Q Sales Department I dealt with the auto companies and other firms and when we tried to figure out our assigned car requirements we needed to know how much CBQ revenue would be generated for each assignment. The CBQ revenue division was a key number and the Divisions folks in Chicago (part of the Rate Department) would give me the divisions verbally only and with instructions that this was confidential information."

Here's a youtube video link that was just posted on the EJ&E group.
This was filmed at Griffith IN in the mid '60s.  There's about 30" of a weed spray train working on the EJ&E, beginning at about  5'00".  There's a broadside shot of the spray car, and a glimpse of the top deck monitors in use.

I checked my large supply of LEDs. Would work for a flat car. The longest leads are still waaay too short for a boxcar.
I also had bought some of that .024 Nickel Silver beading wire wrap awhile back, but it scaled out to 2.5" across the flats, but more importantly when I installed in place with a brake wheel and mechanism, it looked very out of scale and toylike.  I may have picture of it still, will look.

Since I was stuck in moderator limbo for several days, I discovered a previous thread on these cars and specifically a message from Eric Hansmann compiling some very helpful prototype info from the June 1993 Rail Model Journal article about the flat cars (unfortunately, the link http://magazine.trainlife.com/rmj_1993_6/ seems to result in a database access error now).  So I'm abandoning the plan stated below and selecting some from the list in the aforementioned message.


I do have a couple of questions though.  Several list "Mineral Red paint" would a close match be box car red or is a different color of red called for?  Are there any photos of the SP&S, T&P, DL&W, Cotton Belt and CP cars to use for lettering guides? Is there a chance anyone out there happens to have a copy of the linked article I could get a scan of for reference?  It would really help in building these and I've been unsuccessful in finding any from other sources.
