Charlie Seriously ! At our age memory and health and habits ain't what they used to be... I've been known not to read email for weeks at a time. Maybe he didn't expect such a wonderful turn, done so q

Some recent builds
I really like the SLRX truss rod reefer ! Box cars could be surprisingly clean, within a few months of painting... This one was painted eight months before someone took its picture.

Aluminum Box Cars?
Brian thanks for posting that digital scan C&A 1200. The distinctive 14 panel aluminum box cars were built for five railroads C&A, NKP, RI, C&O, M&StL. The Great Northern design was unique to the GN.

I would simply attribute what I see in the NP builder photo to unevenly planed boards i.e. the boards are not exactly perfectly planed to the same thicknesses. With gloss paint, even a tiny difference

Yes, you have it right about the beaded siding. By "V" groove are you talking about beveled edges of the boards so that when they are joined together there is a shallow gap between them? Because, yeah

WWII oil transport
Someone mentioned Sinclair on the UP in Wyoming. This is CNW's yard serving Standard Oil in Casper Wyoming. These would almost all be UTLX cars. Possibly many of these can be modeled in HO from resin

It's really beside the point Dave. The argument was made that tank cars should resemble the "stair step" of box cars while MOST tank cars for DECADES were plain old single dome 8k and 10k (I don't car

I dunno, Bruce. As in most things, I think it 'depends' on what is being modeled. Large numbers of 8,000 gallon and lesser numbers of 10,000 gallon tank cars ARA III/ICC103 were predominant for petrol
