A pretty dubious distinction from a real estate point of view! OTOH, a predecessor to the now ubiquitous “needle towers” with one condo per floor in NYC. Schuyler

Heavy duty flat on ERIE in 1953
And to be clear, my friend Ben and his dad were not photographing that flat car in the early 50s. He believes that picture of the two of them (his dad and the car) was taken in the early 80s. Remarkab

A follow-up on this. I circulated the model photo to my friend Ben Dibble, who send me back a prototype photo of the same car and the same load! “Dad” is his father who was “standing next to the car f

Thanks, Claus. ERIE was famous for high and wide loads, thanks to the original six-foot gauge and resulting clearances. Schuyler

Clamps, Gary. Specially cast clamps to hold the ladder stiles close to the car at the midpoint. There are similar clamps at the top and bottom of the ladders, particularly noticeable at the end ladder

Just catching this thread . . . So what’s happened? Has the car been preserved? Has some museum been made aware of the car? Is there hope that an essentially museum piece of a freight car will be give

Well, Kevin, looks like you probably have scans of the article by Chuck Yungkurth. But if you are still looking, I brought home a copy of the magazine from the North Shore club’s library last night. A

[Non-DoD Source] [RealSTMFC] High load - "NEED SPECIAL HANDLING?" NKP advertising
I know that is one of the variations. I suspect, for no good reason except I think I’ve seen a photo, the NH version is likely. Schuyler

Elden, I recognize that car, at least the general design, as a GSC 58’ depressed center flat. It could indeed have been an ERIE car, 7260-7265, rated at 125 tons, but other railroads had these as well

Hey here's an idea, let's talk about freight cars
Pronounced “Frate Kars.” C&NW 48009 with LARGE load https://www.flickr.com/photos/barrigerlibrary/51112096521/ and here’s the other side. That’s one big impeller. https://www.flickr.com/photos/barrige

Agreed the original image was dark, thanks for prepping it so we can see. I’ve seen archbar trucks like that before. But what I’m curious about is what IS that load? Schuyler
