Varney and Tyco covered hopper prototypes
Off the top of my head, add D&H, DL&W, L&NE, and CNJ to those who converted USRA hoppers to covered hoppers. You asked about prototypes for the Marx/Tyco car. It resembles a design that RDG developed.

Tim's right in saying that cement was shipped over much greater distances than some believe. Data from Susquehanna deliveries in September 1954: NYC 881907 bulk cement from E. Buffalo, NY to North Haw

I hate to rekindle a dormant debate, but I'm in favor of revisitng the Gilbert and Nelson work on general service cars. I don't challenge the methodology or the conclusions of their original work. But

Kato ACF Covered Hoppers
I'm certain Clark and Ed are referring to the 1958 cu ft design. Can't add any other examples of evenly-spaced hatches to Ed's list without referring to my files. If we consider the 1790 cu ft design,

My, my. This is the most traffic I remember a covered hopper post ever generating. And there's lots of interesting info, from painting tips for flexible parts to the origins of Kato's SSW paint color.

Lou, check back issues of ELHS' "The Diamond." Jim Harr covered these cars in a recent Modeler's Workbench. Sorry I can't provide a more specific reference, but my files aren't convenient to me. Jerry

Andrew, I have some information on cars converted by eastern roads such as RDG, CNJ, L&NE, and DL&W. Would this be appropriate for your Columbia and East Hamlet? Jerry Dziedzic

Hi, Rich. That's interesting info about the MC cars. 1929 predates the conversions made by "eastern" roads that I researched. Do you know what service the cars were intended for? Jerry Dziedzic

I suppose ACF's A-B car is one of the oddballs that Richard had in mind. I had forgotten about the Angus car, Dennis -- need to add that to the file. Another oddball was "Lime Car No. 3" for Columbia
