tank cars GATX 22909 and HMHX 6012 in 1949
my guess is that the three compartment tank car contained refinery products used in smaller quantities like lube oils. everywhere that I've lived there were tank farms by water. for a couple of years

Buckeye box car ends?
That's an expensive car to cut up. It's a very nice car on it's own. Every so often you'll find one for sale on ebay. Redball had both plastic and metal versions of a Buckeye end. I don't know if that

don't know why but Howard Ameling (NKP "expert") called them basket cars. NKP steam era stock cars (the ones proceeding these) are featured in the RMC planbook and Mainline Modeler's stock car book. e

How would the carbon black product have been shipped prior...
Around 1981 I worked in a factory where we got it in bags and large cardboard boxes lined with plastic film. It had very light density. Factory made copy machine toner.

A better pin vise
I bought an expensive one from a site I learned about on the old STMFC forum which sells to professional machinists - it worked real well and wasn't outrageously expensive. I've been using carbide mic

[Non-DoD Source] Re: [RealSTMFC] Hauling Sand before Covered Hoppers Became Popular
what about sand used to make concrete? when I was a kid there were 2 abandoned sand quarries near my home where sand had been taken for building homes. One was filled with water and is now a park.

My recollection is that the car was a one-of-a-kind with experimental sides. Can't remember how I know this. I've seen this photo or a similar one several times before, maybe in a CBC or Trainshed

Yes. I found 2 photos of the cars you asked about - 14781 & 14001 - with black diamonds on a lighter colored (freight car red?) background.
