SPAM posts

Warren:

Your provider may have something to do with your lack of SPAM (though I
doubt it). Maybe you just have good karma .... I get my e-mail through a
server at the University of Virginia, and I think they let almost
everything through (perhaps in the misguided interest of "intellectual
freedom"; that was their justification for not blocking Napster).

Kind regards,

Garth & Fellow Steamers,
I remember Garth posting on this earlier, and
meant to post to him about it off-list: but now I'll post to the
group since it is deemed worthy of discussion.
In almost three years, off and on, on the web I have yet to get
spammed. A great deal of that time has also been spent being
connected to Yahoo! ( I am no big fan of Yahoo! either.) I have
absolutely no idea why some of you are getting spammed, and I am
not. I am very careful about where I post my e-mail address, and to
who it is given.

of "make a million dollars" schemes, ads for ANIMAL HOUSE clone

and solicitations for laser toner cartridges from Georgia (reputed

a scam).

If this is a worthy topic to discuss here (it is related to the
administration of our group), I would like to have other members
thoughts on this. I am contemplating a filter which would block the
"yahoo.com" domain, though I wonder if it would also affect the
domain
"yahoogroups.com" which our group operates. Any thoughts on this?

I might add that a filter is only a partial solution to SPAM. Most
SPAM
posters frequently change their addresses and their subject lines
to
sneak around any filters receivers may create. They also use false
addresses, which make direct requests to be removed impossible.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions, but since my e-mail is
provided
by my employer on a state-owned machine, I am not allowed to mount
any
unauthorized blocking software.

Kind regards,

I have not noticed particularly many spam messages from yahoo domains.
Many are from "AOL" (usually spoof addresses, I understand) or from MSN
(maybe spoofs also). But I feel sure the spammers are way ahead of most
filtration schemes.

Ed and Bruce:

I went into the Yahoogroups page as Bruce suggested, and was able to
reset the preferences. We shall see how well this works when I come back
to work on Monday.

Unfortunately, to work the Yahoo registration page, I had to give them a
whole lot of personal information (I lied about some of it) just to move
from screen to screen. What effect this will have I don't know, but I
moved my birthday to February 29th and changed my sex in the process. In
addition, I had to accept over 15 cookies, which I normally have
blocked. I spent half an hour (of company time!) tracking them down and
deleting same from my cache. Probably no harm done, unless I missed
some. I suspect that the "disable cookies" fuction in Netscape does not
actually work. Some cookies are no longer cookies at all, but have been
redesigned to thwart local machine settings.

WRONG! There are apparently harvesters at work or YAHOO lies

SPAM, unfortunately, is just a fact of life. Even more unfortunately,
many of the software providers (e.g. Netscape) are now owned by large
companies (AOL-Time-Warner in the case of Netscape) who make a great
deal of money from advertising. I have noticed recent versions of the
Netscape web browser make it difficult to configure a "proxy" filter
for advertising. (I use Siemen's Webwasher.) If I had a LOT more time
I would compose my own filter software to automatically remove the
crap from my yahoogroups emails... and more intelligent filters for
general SPAM mail.

Egroups and presumably Yahoogroups does prevent "spambots" from doing
the harvesting of emails -- but this can be gotten around by creating
phony subscriptions. I have spotted a few such subscriptions to the
steamloco list and denied them access. But as they say at the CIA,
every measure has a countermeasure. The battle rages on....
