CRDX boxcars - former Pennsy?

hicksco2@...

I am a volunteer with the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois
(www.irm.org), and I am currently researching the history of a trio
of boxcars we have been using for storage. They are CRDX (Chicago
Freight Car Leasing) #5402, 5419, and 5426. All three are steel
boxcars, 44'5" over the coupler pulling faces, built in 1948 and with
110,000 lbs capacity. Our roster claims that they were built by CFC,
but this is highly doubtful. The cars have ASF trucks, but -
intriguingly enough - the trucks have "PRR" cast into them. Is it
possible that these three cars are former Pennsy? If so, does anyone
have any ideas as to what series these cars would have been in?

Here are the links to these cars' pages on the IRM online roster:

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Yikes,

Thats not too much to go on...any chance of some photographs? The closest
I come is the X43 class, built by Greenville, 12/50, with a coupled length
of 44'4", 100,000lbs capacity. See

I realize that I should really have some photos on hand... I am going
to try and take some photos of these cars soon and post them online
(somewhere). I'll be sure to let you know when I am able to do that.

BTW, the reason I'm asking for this information is that the Illinois
Railway Museum is working on making up display signs for the entire
rail collection. These signs, which will be CONSISTENT (for a
change), are 2'x3' aluminum signs with vinyl lettering. Although IRM
has a collection of over 400 pieces of equipment, we're about half
done already - after a year and a half of work. Most of the
remaining cars are freight cars and, since I'm one of a few IRM
members who are interested in researching this stuff for the new
display signs, I may be coming up with other weird, obscure, and
probably unrealistic requests for information in the future. Thanks
in advance to anyone who can help with information about any freight
cars at IRM!

I've responded on the FC list, so I'll repeat myself here as I see the
original questioneer is present.

A measurement over the coupler length isn't very useful. If you can get the
3 interior measurements, rounded down, I'll search my 1950 ORER database and
report back all the hits that match. It'll take only me a couple of minutes
to do, so whenever you get the data, let me know.

Can't help you on the boxcars, but the trucks were certainly cast for the
PRR. It was and still is not uncommon for a customer to specify slight
variances in ASF's standard designs. Further, when casting a large order of
trucks for a customer it's an easy matter to include their initials along
with ASF's. By the way, you should also find letter enclosed by an octagon.
The letter indicates the foundry where the sideframe or bolster was cast.
A - Alliance, OH or G - Granite City, IL and prior to 1958 or 59, E - East
St. Louis, IL.

Hope that helps,
DEJ
