He claims - on this public list no less - to have finished (by my count) at LEAST 20 resin freight car kits in the last 6 weeks. That's more than 3 a week. We all know this just isn't possible. He must not have a layout OR a life, huh? Jeez.... get real, 20 in 6 weeks.... yeh, right!

Right, Bill--
And Tim struggled to get 20 cars done in a year-- while I'd been hoping to get just 12 (and about 11 would be styrene!) Then I went online, so 12 was OUT of the question. But there may be hope now-- I'm getting a FEW cars done, and about every second one is resin. Scott Pitzer |

OH, and PERSONALLY (NOT Branchline) I built 3 1/2 F&C resin O&W wood passenger cars (should count as 7 - have you ever built one of these things?!), painted and detailed two NKP Products brass observations and built a Bethlehem Car Works RPO. And you? :>)

Bill Schneider snipes:
OK folks, I don't know about you, but I'm starting to question theIn fact, Darnaby has one of the most impressive layouts in the country (that's why he needs all those resin freight cars). Cutting edge in concept (it has influenced T. Koester, the layout planning guru, a whole lot), it boasts smooth and very realistic operation (probably even better now than when I was there a couple of years ago), and what's finished in the way of scenery and structures is equivalent in quality and detail to Bill's rolling stock modeling. And there are folks for whom building freight car models IS a life - certainly better than watching daytime TV or playing computer games. Darnaby's secret? He's retired. He gets to build models all day every day if he wants. Eat your heart out, Schneider. Richard H. Hendrickson Ashland, Oregon 97520 |

I still managed to average 16 resin kits each year plus 30 or so other kits even when spending 10 hours a day at GM. I guess just I'm highly motivated as my layout just sucks up the equipment and I'm trying to get the cast ladder stuff off of it. Bill ----- Original Message -----

Retirement... unemployment... whatever.
The secret to spending all that time on model RR stuff is not having small children, and not having so many other commitments and interests. If I could live two lifetimes I'd love to spend one just modeling. But no such luck. At 05:07 PM 7/25/2002, you wrote: Ok,...I confess, I retired 16 months ago after 31 years with EMD. Richard Hendrickson says:
>Darnaby's secret? He's retired. He gets to build >models all day every day if he wants. Eat your heart out, >Schneider. Hmmmpf. Utter nonsense. Since I retired my resin construction has fallen off drastically. There has to be another reason. It can't be lack of kids running around either. My theory is that I have to spend much more time running around researching some new model that has come out. Did one of Al's weird Santa Fe gon's make it to Sherman Hill or not. Which of Martin's Cotton Belt rebuilt DS cars is sitting in the photo in Laramie. Heck...where's the photo? Is that really one of those bazaar ACL DS watermelon cars in Laramie or not and why is it there? Stuff like that. Then I get calls to go look at old cars that have been found. Like the SFRD Rr-23 green reefer recently found in the muck near an old abandoned citrus plant. Have to go over there soon. BTW, since one usually builds resin cars sitting down, Bill Schneider should be building more these days. No excuse, Bill. Mike Brock Richard H. Hendrickson Ashland, Oregon 97520 Yahoo! It must be nice to be retired and have all that free time without other commitments or interests, huh Richard? :>)
I am familiar with Bill D's work if only through the magazines and discussions with Tony K. This doesn't change the fact that I'm impressed with the QUANITY of his output particularly since I know of the quality! Of course, there is more than a little frustration here since in the last week I since I've been back from Florida I have sat down twice to try to build something and never got farther than opening the box! What kind of wine would you suggest with that heart? Bill Schneider Richard Hendrickson gloats.. Darnaby's secret? He's retired. He gets to build models all day every day if he wants. Just what are you saying Mike? And you seemed so nice when we talked in Lauderdale....! :>) For those not attending train shows, standing around on concrete floors for 2.5 days in a row can have its effects on one's ability to stand up. BTW, Bill, thanks for pointing me to Coach Yard late Sunday. The 4800 class UP diner indeed wasn't a 4800. And, yes, I wasn't feeling too nice then. The dealer was as surprised as me, however, and I switched to a beautiful UP FEF-1...little more expensive, however. Mike Brock |
