early arrival in Naperville

Bill Welch <bwelch@...>

I will be coming into Naperville on Wednesday, Oct 22. If there are any
other early arrivals that would like to talk about freight cars over dinner,
I would enjoy that. I will have a car.

Bill, Tony and I will be arriving at O'Hare at 4:50 and will also have a
car. Several others are also coming early. We could all gather at the
hotel in Naperville and go from there.

Why not meet at Des Plaines Hobbies and go to dinner from there? There are
many great restaurants in the area and it would be on the way as DPH is less
than 10 minutes north of O'Hare....

Did I mention there's a Krispy Kreme on the way back to
Naperville? Mix that with a burrito and you have a potential
Weapon of Mass Destruction. Hoo-wah!

The suggestion was based on the time of arrival at O'Hare of a group of
early attendees..... and making the quick jaunt up to DesPlaines, blowing
some time at the shop, then going to dinner locally is a lot better than
driving south to Naperville in rush hour!!! :-)

Right! And for a taxi you guys are going to be transported in the
highway version of an ICC-105W that has been pressure tested to twice
the normal presssure and had the safety valves reset accordingly. Or
is the Chicago Bomb Squad going to be on stand-by???!!!

Think I'll pass (no pun intended) on this trip!

Good luck! Don Valentine

This coming from a person whose state thinks that it is OK to put pineapple,
ham and watercress on a Pizza???? Ha Ha!
Now if you were from Seattle or Portland I could understand..... although we
now have a few drive through cafineries, Those Guys are serious about their
coffee!!!
BTW, to maintain mandatory freight car content, isn't terrible that the
Hobbysmith released a Krispy Kreme car in N Scale?

Tony,
What's this watery midwestern coffee? You come on over to Treynor,
Iowa and I'll make you some real coffee and even furnish the Krispy
Kreme's. Or the next time you are in Omaha doing research, you just
call. 20 miles east of the old PFE Ice Dock in Council Bluffs.

I need to set you all straight.

Those guys in Seattle learned at the knee of Alfred Peet in Berkeley Ca. and
after they learned their lessons and got good they moved north to Seattle.
After Alfred died the Seattle establishment bought the Peets chain (a Bay
Area intuition) but when the hired NYC suits threw their muscles around in
Seattle one of the Starbucks founders said screw this, I'll take Peets and
you can have Starbucks.

So what'cha got today is a bunch of suits running the biggest coffee chain
in the world and the master brewers are here in the bay area showing
everybody how to do it right.

Dave Nelson
Drinking only Peets since 1973, wonder what color my kidneys are?

P.S. Obligatory freight car content: Mucho coffee was shipped out of the bay
area in the steam years. Did anybody figure out why Hills Bros. thought
they needed a boxcar or was that just billboard adverstising?

As an Oregonian (and thus, by definition, an expert on coffee) who visits
Northern California often, I can assure you that excellent coffee is
available almost everywhere in the San Francisco Bay area, whereas it is
available almost nowhere in the midwest. (Southern Calif. is another
country about which I know relatively little; I only make oocasional and
brief forays there and leave ASAP.) As for pizza, I've visited Italy as
well, where pizza is available with a head-swimming variety of toppings,
and any midwesterner who presumes to declare what constitutes "authentic"
pizza is being, shall we say, more than a little provincial.

BTW, to maintain mandatory freight car content, isn't terrible that the

To run, or to eat? N scale freight cars are just about the right size for
a snack bar....

Now that I've managed to offend a wide variety of list subscribers, back to
your regular programming.

They actually had two second-hand wood sheathed box cars, both with
billboard lettering created by a sign painter, but those cars never
appeared in the ORERs because they were in captive service moving coffee
beans from incoming ships at the docks to the Hills Bros. roasting plant.
So if you thought you could run one in your UP train on Sherman Hill,
fagedaboudit.

Yeah, I know, farmers drink it all day; that's why it's watery. There are
those, however, who like a little more intense cup.
And BTW, the fact that some individuals or restaurants make serious
coffee in the Midwest doesn't change the fact that in an awful lot of
Midwestern restaurants and home kitchens, the stuff is just plain weak.
I've been there.

Well, before Deputy Sheriff Aley puts the clamps down, I'll add that as
a Connecticut 'Nutmegger', New Haven is the home of pizza in the US
(and that stuff they call New York style pizza is a poor substitute for
New Haven pizza.) If you're in New Haven go to Frank Pepe's on Wooster
St for a slice of heaven (since 1929.) Chicago pizza is not bad, but
it's more akin to a casserole! By the way, did they use freight cars
to haul all the flour that made the pizza dough during the Steam Era?

Running for cover as there are more Windy Cityers on this list than New
Havenites.

Ted Culotta

Before any Midwesterners start pronouncing on pizza, they need to learn that
pizza is a pie, and therefore it should be round and cut into wedges, not
rectangular and cut into those stupid little squares with no crust on the
middle pieces that you can't grab onto without getting your fingers in the
sauce!

So there,

too long.)
