However, Mr. Fortney's information is not correct. I can say with certainty that the ITC box cars in question are not PS-1s. For starters, the first PS-1 was built in 1947 and this car was a former RDG car was built 1946. Secondly, RDG never bought any new PS-1s. Regards, Ed Hawkins |

David,Ed, I stand corrected, ITC 8400-8459 series boxcars were the rebuilt PS-1s, leased from Darby Co. in 1971 and painted in the ITC yellow/green letter/red trucks scheme. Mike Fortney |

Ed and Ian,
Here's a bit more to add to your information from Mike Fortney who replied on IT list. "ITC boxcar series 400-499 were acquired by lease 11/3/63 from Chicago Freight Car Co. Cars were originally PS-1s built for the Reading RR, were rebuilt with strengthened under door side sill for ITC. Lease expired 11/2/74. (Source: Register of Rosters Freight Equipment, Dale Jenkins, 2003)" In addition, here is one reference photo I located on the Fallen Flags site: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/itc/itc499ajs.jpg HTH, David Jobe _____ From: Ed Hawkins [mailto:hawk0621@...] Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 1:55 AM To: STMFC@... When built this series came with 4/4 Improved Dreadnaught Ends, 7-panel Superior doors, Ajax hand brakes, Apex running boards and Duryea underframes, so these items could be checked for a match with the ITC photo. A photo of RDG 104295 appears on page 69 of the Reading Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, albeit a late photo for this group. Perhaps this question is technically outside the bounds for discussion of this group even though it pertains to a car built 1946. Presumably Mike will comment if it is. Regards, Ed Hawkins Yahoo! I have a picture of an Illinois Terminal box carnumbered 428 taken about 1964. From the notes on the back of the picture, itmaybe an ex-Reading car built 11/46. Does anyone have the history of this series and whereit came from? Series is 400-499, not listed in the 10/63 ORER, 100 cars listed in the 7/64 issue. They're noted as 40'6" cars, 10'6" IH, with 8' doors. There are no exact matches listed under the Reading numbers at that time, but there are a number of similar cars from about 104000 and up (I have no info as to when any of these cars were built).
