Caboose Trucks

Yes, Precision Scale still makes them, the PSC part #31968, to search on Caboose

Hobbies web site use 058531968.
To my knowledge these are for narrow guage trucks and not big enough for Kadee HO trucks. My retailer here also says they are not listed in the current PS catalogue and he has phoned them but they report they are not making them.

So if you have a retail source and need these springs you had better 'snap' them up.

Looks like I need to go into manufacturining. Anyone have a 10 ton press? I have a source for 4mm wide phosphor bronze.

Harold and all,
I know they are not for narrow gauge trucks since I have some of these and purchased them not even a year ago. They fit Kadee trucks and Central Valley trucks nicely.
Also Caboose Hobbies shows them on their online catalog as being "in stock" so if what Harold says is true you better get them now.
I think I would call Prec. Scale directly to make sure you are getting accurate information. Caboose Hobbies could also verify the items status.

Strange - they are listed in the latest catalogue and I've had no problems
getting these ( or the O scale version #357 ) from PSC and just had some
arrive a
few weeks ago. Though they are intended for the narrow gauge caboose, they
look like they would fit a standard gauge Kadee truck with no problem.

Absolutely! I've had the experience several times
of finding out that manufacturers ARE making
parts, but the distributors can't be bothered
carrying them in stock.

There has been a discussion recently about the PSC leaf springs and what they look like and what they fit.
Well, for all those interested I have put some photos up on the STMFC group photos section showing what the PSC caboose leaf springs look like after they are installed. These trucks are Central Valley Archbar trucks with Intermountain metal wheelsets with the PSC Leaf Springs in place of the standard coil springs. These springs also fit nicely in most Kadee trucks as well. Also they come 12 to a pack (6 pair.)

I have had difficulty getting the springs in and without springing them. What I do now in put them in the best I can, then insert a small piece of styrene in the back side of the truck frame to hold the truck rigid and keep the spring in place. I CA it in and then paint.

Yes, they can be very tricky to get installed while keeping much of their spring tension. I have tried several ways with all being somewhat successful. But the best way is to catch the holes on one side of the truck and then gently slide the other end of the spring up into the springbox until it catches. The trick is to not put anymore pressure on the spring than is necessary to get it in place.
When I was younger it was an easy task but now that I am getting up there it gets harder to see what I am doing. Of course making it harder to get them in place without mashing them too much and having to start the process over again.
I still like the other type of leafsprings that were available years ago much better than these, I believe they were make by Kemtron. They were not cut off so short, right behind the mounting holes, as these "new" ones are. They continued on so that there was almost as much sticking outside the truck as there was inside the truck frame. This made them more stable and the top and bottom of the spring actually touched each other on the inside which gave it much more spring tension. But, oh well, they are not available anymore.

Among the stash of parts left over from my youthful modeling days
(1950-1960) when, like Pete, my eyesight was better and my hands steadier,
is a box of such leaf springs. The label says "P-4, Caboose Trucks [sic]
Leaf Springs, 12 ea - 5 ea, List 60". I believe they were made by Silver
Streak. They are punched and formed in strips of four, and are mightily
stiff. Denny probably remembers them.
