Wanda Petroleum

Shawn Beckert

Guys,

We're having a discussion over on the baby boomer list about
Wanda Petroleum (Houston, Texas) and its fleet of tank cars.
I've been on the net this morning looking for references to
Wanda Petroleum and have found very little.

Could one of you people with access to a Moody's Industrial
please look up this company? I'd like to pin down when Wanda
actually came into existence - during or after the steam era?

Thanks,

Shawn Beckert

I can't help much, Shawn, but I do have one photo of a GATX car lettered
for Wanda petroleum. However, it was a 75' frameless whalebelly welded
propane car that was brand new in 1963, so definitely not steam era.

5210 unread STMFC messages and I have to pick one that causes me to crawl
under tables to reach two 10 pound books... And the answer is: "Nothing".
Wanda had not issued any debt that was held by the public in either 1947 or
1954, which covers my two copies of Moody's Industrials.

Wanda Petroleum was not listed in the 1958 Industrial Manual either.

A Google search comes up with reporting marks dating back to 1971. One
details the changes in LEYX from year to year as the company was bought and
sold from Dow to Ashland, etc.

Certainly NOT steam era; firmly planted in the bbfcl list (that¹s
baby-boomerfreight car list).

I had a quick look through my listing of reporting marks, and the first reference to Wanda Petroleum doesn't occur until the January 1969 issue when they listed VPCX reporting marks (these had belonged to the Virginia Petroleum Corp.). These reporting marks were eliminated in the October 1970 issue.

The second reference occurs in the October 1971 issuer, when they added LEYX reporting marks, again under the Wanda Petroleum Co. (these had belonged to the Falley Petroleum Co.). LEYX reporting marks were eliminated with the July 1990 issue.

List,

Thanks for the help with researching this company (sorry
about your knees, Dave). Well, since Richard has a photo
of a Wanda Petroleum car with GATX reporting marks dating
from 1963, we know that the company was in existence at
least that far back. It's looking more and more like a
post-steam era outfit, though. Odd that it seems to pop
in and out of view during various years.

At the risk of incurring wrath for non-steam era content, the popping in and
out was due to reporting marks being added and eliminated due to changes in
corporate ownership of Wanda, i.e., from a private company to a subsidiary
of Ashland, to a division of Ashland, to a division of Dow, to a subsidiary
of Dow, etc., etc. See: <http://www.nakina.net/reportl.html> for specific on
the LEYX marks.

Research on steam era marks may reveal the same pattern on other marks.
{Mandatory steam era content 8^)}
