fallen flags web site

The fallen flags web site has an incredible number of photos
including freight car photos but most of those freight car photos
were taken after the steam era.

However the Erie section (part of EL I think) has many steam era
freight car photos including builders photos and official Erie
photographer John Long photos. Almost all of these Erie freight car
photos were unselfishly donated by Dan Biernacki who rescued the
negatives from a dumpster.

Do any of the other railroad files contain steam era freight car
photos or diagrams? There must be 100s of files. I haven't found any
others with steam era freight cars.

George posts what he gets given to him. It's
amazing what people have given him, and to some
degree WHO has given him stuff, like Vollrath. I
think Vollrath figures that if you REALLY want the
photo in a good quality way, you'll buy the real
print from him.

People need to realize that photos are only useful
if others can see them. Yeah, I know about
copyright issues, but at some point you have to
trust that anybody using these images for a
serious use like publication, or even detailing a
model, will be looking for a quality print, and
asking permissions.

Give George your images so he can make that site
even more of a resource than it is.

Ed,

The Fallen Flags site is one of the best online for steam-era freight car
photos and diagrams, but it's not the only one. There are several
railroad-specific sites with hundreds of diagrams, especially the NYC and
Pennsy. Another good general site is the NEB&W website ($5 a month, but well
worth it). And although it takes a LOT of time, digging through all the
photos and links on Railfan.net will yield additional information. Looking
to non-rail sites, the Denver Public Library has hundreds of rail-related
photos online (mostly Colorado prototypes), and the Library of Congress has
thousands (want to know what the Chicago railroad scene looked like in
color, in 1942?)

Here's just a few of the many sites online that include visual RR
information:

Good afternoon,

Steam era pics turn up in many of the files. However the resent postings by
Steve Wydeck of ACF builders photos are at ........

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/acfx/acf-h.html

Which is tacked on to the ACF Industries file, these have not been sorted
into the main files. Lots of photos.
