Hatches on reefers

Is there any correlation between the position of the hatches (open or
closed) on a refrigerator car and whether it's loaded or empty?

Paul,

The short answer is no. Open hatches mean loads in ventilator service,
while closed hatches mean either loads with ice, or an empty car.
Interestingly, a given load might have it hatches open for a period and
closed for another, depending on weather conditions and the need to
maintain the correct temperature for the load. There are some great
accounts of this in the PFE book (Thompson, Church and Jones).

Closed vents can mean a heated car also in the winter.

Thanks Larry, I forgot about that! Would those cars have had a
"Warning" placard to air the car before entering? I imagine entering a
closed car with a charcoal heater could be hazardous to your health!

Back in the days I was on the RR and in this list's time frame NO warning on the out side. But when a RR worker had to enter it was on the way bill as a heated car with instructions . RR workers had been trained on how to handle them. I was told that there was a warning on the inside of the doors when opened for unloading
Also we would take a Hobo out every once in a while. He would get in to the end that did not have the heater and that was his end. There was only one heater to a car and they were put in the B end.
