Genesee Brewing Company Reefer

John Bartolotto <jsbart@...>

Anyone have any ideas where I can find an HO scale Genesee Brewing
Company reefer? I thought Walthers produced one years ago, but I
can't find it.

John, Walthers did produce one years ago from the old T-M molds. I
picked
one up a few years back at a show, for kicks. In Western New York,
you
know it a good bar if there is a Genny sign in the window.

Brian,

Thanks! I knew I wasn't imagining things. Any idea where I can get one or
find the decals for it? I intend on modeling it in Z scale.

The November 1925, January 1938, April 1949 & April 1955 ORER's did not list any Genesee Beer reefers. Were the reefers owned by a private car line who leased reefers to Genesee? I doubt that because Genny was & is somewhat a local beer having limited distribution.

Tony,

I'm not sure. I'm modeling the NYC circa 1930's Rochester, NY area and was
intrigued about this Genesee reefer on a beer reefer car web site. Any help
would be appreciated.

Wow, this generated more discussion than I expected. I happen to have
the Walthers car handy and it is a wood sided car (not that that
means it is correct) and the reporting marks are GBCX 107. Other data
includes
CAPY 7000 lbs
LD LMT 80500 lbs
WT 51500 E.R. 11-33
Rebuilt 8-33 (to the right of the above data)

It Sides are painted white, ends and roof brown, Lettering on the
sides is black with a red GENESEE and red cicle around a black circle
on the right side.

Maybe someone can find it in a 30's ORER.

The 1960 and later Genesee and Wyoming cars are from a totally
different railroad.

Keep in mind this is an earlier T-M car from and era when Walthers
didn't really care about protype correctness.

After 1934, the ICC decision would not have allowed new billboard reefer paint (though existing ones were grandfathered two more years). Roger Hinman identified the Genesee lease as 1935-36. This suggests to me that the paint scheme on this model is bogus.

To help referee, I've just uploaded a poor scan of a xerox of a newspaper article showing GBCX101 to the files section. The caption states
the car was built in 1933 which I have never believed since it is a 1920s M4. The rebuild data stated below concurs with this thinking. The paint scheme in black and white appears similar to that described in the Walthers car below. Jack Amerine in his write up on MDT many years ago mentioned that Walther's had a wonderful photo library that many of their decals were based on.

When I attended Richard Hendricson's talk on Billboard reefers at Naperville, I believe it was stated the law stopped one from advertising products that
weren't carried; in this case as long as beer was the product being carried, it would not violate that criteria. Not fact, just an opinion on what I think I heard.

The dates given for service(1935-36) are when the reporting marks show in the ORERs. By the 1930s I believe the ORERs were only being updated once a year/

What Richard said is that the cargo was ONE criterion for the ICC advertising restrictions. There were others too, primarily the banning of the provision by the lessor of free paint jobs for the lessee's product, at no charge for the advertising value. Whether MDT was in that game, I don't know; URTX and GARX had the biggest fleets of cars prepared that way. And the permission for limited advertising was not clear for a few years; in the mid to late 1930s everyone's scheme was VERY simple. Thus I continue to doubt the timing of the supposed Genesee beer scheme, but of course am open to specific proof.

Another possibility is the paint scheme shown
was done for publicity and the actual cars in service did not
carry it.
I thought I did pretty good to find any photo; finding one in a real
consist will be a real challenge

Clover House makes lettering for the Genesee Brewing Co
of Rochester NY. Russ Clover kindly sent me a scan of the car. It
appears to be an MDT Bettendorf underframe 40' car of the type built
ca. 1913-1917 (2 equal corner straps, rebuilt with 6- hinge door
instead of 8-hinge door). In the Clover House catalogue it is
incorrectly referred to as a 36' car. Color was listed as yellow, but
I bet it
was more likely white, with red ends and roof.
