fire sale for Trix?
ed_mines
Maybe Trix will dump their recently released US prototype freight
cars at fire sale prices somewhere down the road. Ertl did this and they had much nicer cars. Now I see P2K assembled cars being sold at deep discount by my "local" hobby shop - Trainland in Lynbrook. I also see some Broadway Limited locos being sold at deep discount. Maybe Trix will break up the freight car sets and sell them at a more reasonable price too. The new Trix NYC caboose got a terrible review in MR, and a bad review isn't seen too often. I don't know who is impressed by the oversized plastic grab irons that this new caboose has. Thin ridges of plastic representing grab irons (like the ones used on Bowser cars) look much better and can be painted with the side of a paint brush. These plastic ridges are easy enough for guys like us to carve off and replace with wire. Let's hope P2K (and all the other manufacturers) continue to come out with new steam era freight car models. Tom; I have no connection with any hobby shop or mail order firm, but some of the problem is that these folks have to place their ads MONTHS before the magazines hit the stores or your mailbox. They are told, as we are, that product "X" will be available on such and such date. As we all know, quite often these dates are pushed back due to many reasons. Now what are these places to do? If they don't advertise, then their competitors might be able to get sales for product "X" as well as for items that everyone *does* have in stock. It really is a no win situation for everybody. Certainly some do jump the gun, but how many years did Bachmann advertise their Spectrum 2-8-0 (which looks great decked out as either Grand Canyon Railway 18 or 29 pulling steam era freight cars) before it finally was delivered? The interesting thing concerning the deep discounts offered for the Broadway Limited stuff in MR by companies such as Standard Hobby Supply, Trainworld and others are that None of them have the product! I know, as I called every one of them and received the same reply: BACKORDERED!!! Not only that, but several that ran ads, are only taking orders for selected Broadway locomotives--no rolling stock! deep discounts offered for the Broadway Limited stuff --sic--received thesame reply: BACKORDERED!!!< It's easy to check the BLI web site and see what they have in stock and what they don't have. Some of those items listed as backordered BLI doesn't have stock on them! Yes, it is true that ads in the model press take about two months to finally show up after they are sent in, but I do not think that this is new stock. From what I hear from my dealer is that the lead principal of Broadway Limited is no longer with them and they may have bought him out with product rather than money and he is dumping the stuff to cash out. Whether this is true remains to be seen. Also, it may be that this stock that is being discounted is the returned items that had to be repaired due to defects which BLI was offering later on their website. Those items that were repaired and offered through the BLI website were offered as a one-way sale without warranty and were marked as remanufactured. This is also the end of the tax year and many businesses dump inventory to avoid the tax penalties which treat inventory as income. It is interesting that only the original runs of equipment, from the N&W Class A's through the E7s, are to be available for sale at discounted rates, but none of the newer items beginning with the PRR K4s, C&O T1s, and the rolling stock are available at discounted rates. I am sure that discounted N&W H2a hoppers and the new PRR K7a stock cars would sell out quick if they were deeply discounted like the earlier models. What is a shame is that the Pennsy K7a stock cars without sound only (per BLI website) in four numbers, rather than the four groups of six numbers each that the N&W H2a's came in. I will have to renumber about a dozen cars, that is, after I make the changes that Bruce smith recommended (see Bruce's post regarding what needs to be upgraded) on this list a few days ago. I am sure that there are going to be a number of people who will be doing the same thing. After all, who buys just four? arrived. The model I wanted was out of stock, so I surfed the web and sent a few emails and Trainworld said they expected them in that Friday. I sent an email again on Friday, and they were available at $135. I placed my order and they arrived in 2 days! I am a happy camper. Trainworld will have my business again. regards, Andy Miller -----Original Message-----
