The photo entitled, "Dallas, Texas, 1953" shows what appears to be
one of the NH 10'PS-1 box cars that have been discussed in this past
weekend's string.
Those cars were built in 1948. The photo shows that the car has
a red door, instead of a black door. Did the NH repaint cars that
often? Or did some of them get delivered without black doors?
Thanks,
Phil Buchwald

Regarding the photo at Dallas in 1953: I'd say it's a classic
example of how B&O's Oxide Red paint stands out from the pack.

I'll leave it up to Ed Hawkins to verify the original P-S bill of
materials, but all of the photos of these cars in original paint
that I've seen have black ends and doors. The car in the photo
looks like it has a fresh paint job. If it had been delivered
without black doors, you'd see a car with 6 years worth of
weathering and wear. Five years is a short time between paint jobs
for steel cars; however, something must have happened to this car to
require new paint. Most likely, the car was damaged in a wreck and
repainted after repairs, but without car records, this is
speculation.

Ends too? Good to know. You can't really tell from the photo i've
been referring to. The door definitly shows contrast, but from the
angle, the ends may have been washed out, so don't appear any darker
than the sides. Also, I wish that I could tell the car number in
the "Dallas" photo. It would be a nice contrast to have two
different paint jobs on models. However if it was a wreck or some
unusual repaint, then there probably weren't too many of them
without black doors, so the exact car number would be nice to have.
Also... (sorry for the ramble), I went ahead and tried my own
suggestion this weekend for making one of those 10' tall cars. I
tried to make a photo, but the file is too large to post, so I'll
have to see tomorrow if someone can help me reduce the file size.
Anyway, I was able to carefully cut the sides down without ruining
the original ends. I left the roof off, and marked/scribed a line 6"
down below the horizontal strip weld line. Then I replaced the small
horizontal strip with two thicknesses of .030 x .040 Evergreen, with
the .040 side vertical. This just about exactly matched the height
of the original strip, and saved the trouble of removing the scrap
from the original strip. I then trimmed the ends to match the new
side height. Had to remove the lip from inside the roof so the roof
would sit flush on the sides, and after that, everything just glued
together like a stock kit. The doors are Accurail 7', 7 panel
Superior, with the top panel cut down, and a top frame made out of
that same .030 x .040. It seems to be working out so far! I'm
letting the glue evaporate before a little clean-up sanding, and
then next stop is the paint booth.

Nice "slope sheet only" loading shown too! Just like
the loading diagrams. Did the gravel in hoppers stay
that way in transit or settle down into the car? I
have seen a video of a set of PRR GR gons with a plume
of dust trailing from their loads of crushed stone.
Maybe BLI will attempt to model this.

where the capital dome logo is on the left side of the car nearer the
initials and numbers. The next car, a ribbed side type, has the more
common scheme with the logo on the right side. The other cars are
various ribbed side twin hoppers, but the images are too small to
distinguish what B&O Classes they are. Most of those still have
earlier lettering styles in use before the introduction of the capital

It's also a great view of how dense gravel was loaded in hoppers

I hope this helps.
