Ohio Hobby Shops - Any Good Ones?
S. Busch <SCSBusch@...>
There is, or was a few years back at least, a great sort of Museum in the rough of full size, park train size, and O scale size locos and cars at the Crown Plaza Quaker Square hotel in Akron. I always liked to gawk and climb on everything when ever I stayed there. It was a Hilton hotel last time, so you might want to find out first if the stuff is still there

Wellll
(hell, practically lived at) the original Reed's Hobby Shop in Oakland (yeah,IMHO<<, which is driven by once having lived in the Bay area and frequented back in the early 70's), and visits to Original Whistle Stop, Allied, and other REAL stores . . . Pickin's in the east are slim. >>IMHO<<. Here in Massachusetts, there are two and a half REAL stores. Bob Buck's Tucker's Hobbies out in the boonies in Warren MA (75 minutes from me with a lead foot), Bay State Hobbies run by Win Nowell in Groveland (60 minutes in the opposite direction), and I have to include Charlie Ro's in Malden, though that's more of a supermarket of trains than a Real Serious Model Railroad Shop. Now, there are some others which are pretty good, but which I have not visited, but generally, I think most modelers have much the same opinion as I do. For a city of Boston's scale, there are not many options. SGL -----Original Message----- |

Ah, Columbus-- now I can help you. The Train Store on Indianola Ave. in north Columbus is better than any of the shops in Cleveland/Akron area. Check Model Railroader magazine for their ad. Lots of car kits for HO-- all of the usual brands including lots of Bowser kits. Prices are standard-- no deals, but much to choose from. Dave Siegfried -------Original Message-------

The shop I do most of my mail order business with is The Train Station at 4430 Indianola Ave. Owner Mike Flick is a good guy and an avid and knowledgeable Santa Fe modeler. Go see him and tell him I sent you. Richard Hendrickson |

The reports on the shops given so far are accurate-- for northeast Ohio standards (I am a native). I don't know where you are from, but Ohio standards PALE (to say the least) when compared to the shops in Jersey (even South Jersey) and Newark/Philadelphia. Anyone not modeling modern railroads can do no "window shopping" here. Thank God for e-Bay. Dave Siegfried (near Akron) -------Original Message-------

Dean Payne <deanpayne@...>
Shawn,
The two shops that in the Cleveland area that I like are Depot Train and Hobby on W. 130th, and Wings Hobby Shop in Lakewood. I'll have to check out Stewarts in Willoughby on Eric's recommendation. Just West of downtown Cleveland is The Flats, where you can see a lot of lift bridges, and a swing bridge (auto, not RR). The Crawford Auto/Aviation Museum doesn't have any RR stuff, but is still quite interesting. Anyway, if you can make it to Depot Train and Hobby, talk to Jim, the resident RR buff. They have a few boxes of detail parts from Cal Scale etc., and some of those have been around for quite a while. Akron has a few shops that I just haven't been to recently enough to comment on. If I find myself down that way with time to spare... Dean Payne --- In STMFC@..., "Beckert, Shawn" <shawn.beckert@d...> wrote: Guys, |

=================================================== I stumbled into Stewart Hobbies in Willoughby a month back. This is east of Cleveland and along the lake. Nice store with some kits and detail parts. I picked up two of the new Walthers GATX express reefers, but they did not stock Detail Associates brass wire. They did have more Branchline kits than I have ever seen anywhere, and of course I bought a few. It's worth a stop, which is more than I can say for many hobby shops I've been in lately. Sad. Eric |
