Scratch BL&E USRA thread, check your IL......

The discussion of the following car as a USRA car/USRA clone: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ble/ble34894awb.jpg Has one fatal error. A check of the series in the October 1970 ORER (I assume valid for the class per the 5-70 reweigh date at "GS", a B&LE scale) shows 40' IL for this B&LE series. I did not think this at first, but it looks a little short in the online photo, but as I had to pan on my monitor, I did not notice this until I shrunk it. Not a 46' IL car..... Now, as for Messrs. Hendrickson and Carlson, discussion on the NSS cars: NSS did build some of their own cars. Brian, if the photos are a close match....but you do not list a builder? As per Richard's thoughts on the Andrews trucks and a 1920s build date... For grins: I did compare the B&LE photo to some 40' IL gons built for the L&N (some went to the Tennessee Central also, we NEED photos of those cars if anyone has them) built in the 1920s and 1930 by Pressed Steel Car, not even close to the photos of the L&N car in any way. Could the Andrews trucks be a later addition to increase capacity? Also, the tab above the trucks looks familiar. Looks the same as those on the Union RR and LT gons: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-l/lt2197ajs.jpg And if memory serves, these cars were built by Standard Steel Car Company? Is this tab a spotting feature of their cars, or is this some USS road mandated part? Cordially- Garrett Rea Nashville, TN -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Garrett and all the Newburgh and South Shore cars is listed as built by
Magor Car Company. Was the NSS a USS road? Since the ORER entry says this is a 40' car maybe my original premise is back in play. Brian J Carlson P.E. Cheektowaga NY |

My ORER checks only no 3' IH cars, that would match the IH of the BLE car. Also remember that NSS built cars (capacity of 2-3 a day at their peak) including some PRR GS and H21 clones apparently. Not really sure on the USS bit, a co-worker had family that worked for them, I will try and ask him in the next few days. They are not currently in the USS road pool (Transtar, Inc.). The car number for the NSS gon in the 1943 CBC is 1200. 40' 50-ton car. It
also has the tabs you mentioned at the bolster sides. Brian J Carlson P.E. Cheektowaga NY |
