CofG ventilated boxcars

Although the built up model of this new kit looks to be of high
quality, those of us modeling the post WWII era will not want it unless
we are willing to overlook the fact that these cars were rebuilt by
this time with a Hutchins roof. The model has the Murphy XLA roof that
many cars built in the same era had.

Bill, do you have dates for when this roof change took place? There's information that says that the roof was replaced on these cars but no specific dates can be found. I appreciate the constructive criticism on the kit. The Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society's goal is to be as accurate as possible on a project of this type. Do you, or anyone else know if a drawing exist for the Murphy roof as applied to these cars? It's highly possible that if the information can be located that a future run of these cars could incorporate the changes discussed here. Thanks for your help. Todd Horton

The earliest photos I have seen are from circa 1947-48 w/this roof. I
don't if any drawing exist, but I think there are enough photos of
these would provide enough info. to get the roof correct for this
refit.

While looking through some information this past weekend It was noted that the C of G vent car roster outnumbered all other Southeastern roads fleets except SAL in 1948. There's a definite interest in the cars with the later roofs as there was still 13 cars on the C of G in 1957. Hopefully more information will surface to help with an updated kit. Todd Horton

Hi Bill, Since I started the post, I obviously have one of these kits AND now
need to make it post WW II. Sawing the roof off is not the end of the world
if I know from what kit/model to scavenger the correct roof. As usual your
help, or any other help is appreicated.

Paul and others, postwar photos show the cars to have been retrofitted with Hutchins Dry Lading roofs. The most obvious source for a Hutchins roof is an Accurail single-sheathed box car, though some modification of length/width might be required to get a correct fit.

To the list, I apologize for the bandwidth;

I would like to take a moment of the groups time to thank Todd Horton
and the others who responded to my post re: the C of G Ventilated Boxcar
model. This is indeed an exciting new development in producing master
models, that I have been waiting for. I have worked with SLA technology
for 10 years and am pleased that I can now see the benefits of it put to
use for my hobby as well as my profession. I look forward to these kits.

Thanks again to all;

Best regards;

Jim Harr
