AHM container car(s)

Kurt Laughlin <fleeta@...>

I was just realizing that there were actually two distinct AHM container cars, neither of which included containers.

The first (which I have) was the 5394 series, as pictured here:

http://tycotrain.tripod.com/ahmhoscaletrainscollectorsresource/id4.html

Note that this has 22 compartments and has a lower frame work than the other type, pictured here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-AHM-ETHYL-BX-90-LG-CONTAINER-Train-Car-HO-MIB_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ6067539736

which has 28 compartments as described in the ORER.

John Nehrich states that this latter car is based on SHPX 50008, so what is the prototype for the 5394 series?

Interesting!:
The 5394 series car looks very close to the SP prototype in terms of
the exterior rack support structure. Of course I am not sure if the
overall length and the container foot supports or internal rack
supports match...but the concept is definitely there.

Mike and all,

I have been following this message and was just wondering if it wouldn't make more sense to have someone like AMB create a kit for the SP "structure" on a correct SP flat car, if it is currently made?

Greg:
I have already built an NYC car and it is different from the SP car.
I'm sure that the SP fans would be interested though. Especially if
the kit included the foot sockets on the floor mounting. My next
project along these lines is the steel casting flats that NYC has
that used the Lot 828-F cars as the basis. In fact I have already
started the design work on the bracing structures and cast bins.

The same two cars were done by Roco in N Scale. (IIRC the HO cars were also done by Roco, origiinally for AHM).
The lower height framework car in the N Scale version had cylindrical containers with coned tops as a load.
The higher height framework car was a LCL Container Car. MiniTrix imported this car without any load.
I've not tried to document the prototypes for these cars but seem to remember seeing photos of both at one time or another, maybe in a CBC.
Pictures of the loaded N Scale Calcuium Carbide Car in N can be found at http://Irwinsjournal.com/a1g/a1g_3021.jpg
These cars were part of a series using a common underframe that also included a Pulpwood Car in both HO and N.

Hi Charlie
The lower height framework car is a model of the two ESPEE calcium
carbide cars.It looks identical to, and is numbered for one of them.
The other three paint jobs were fantasy schemes, It was listed as a 55'
car, but is actually 53',6",like the prototype.I'm upgrading one for my
ESPEE coasline layout www.tinyURL.com/3kz4j
The pulpwood car is longer, and has different frame construction. One
of the four roads is for the prototype car. I remember seeing a picture
of the prototrpe pupwood car with Norfolk & Western markings which is
among the four roads offered on the pulpwood car.
I also have one of the Minitrix container cars. I'd like to know what
the containers looked like ,so I could model them.
I also have a helium car ,and vinegar car that are about the same
vintage. Atlas released these, plus some other exotic equipment around
the early70s. I'm glad that I stashed some away. I haven't seen the HO
cars.

Charlie-
Thanks for the corrections/clarifications. I didn't pull out my examples of the cars to compare when I made the post.
The Helium cars (in both HO and N) were pretty decent trainset RTR models...but not up to Prototype Modeler standards.
The Vinegar Tank Car is AFAIK just wrong... sized way too big in order to fit an existing underframe.
I'll have to see if I can run across the photo of the container car... I dont' remember if the containers were pictured.
