Montour Quad Offset-Side Hoppers Circa 1956
Ed Hawkins
Group,
In circa 1956 Montour obtained 45 quadruple offset-side hopper cars that were originally owned by Erie. The number grew to 62 in series 100-161 by the late 1950s. Does anyone know with certainty what color these Montour cars were painted (i.e., black or freight car red)? Thank you in advance. Regards, Ed Hawkins |

From the book "Montour RR" by Gene P. Schaeffer, there is only one entry regarding this series under Hopper Cars in the equipment summary. It states the following: 100-169 - Former Erie Railroad 70 Ton Hoppers. Built 1902. Purchased from Briggs & Turvis. No date. Regarding the color, one has to "assume" ( a big word to get you in trouble with) from the summary regarding hopper car fleet on page 109, all were painted black with white lettering. It gives exceptions to this painting scheme to certain groups of cars and individual cars that differed. So, I would say that Black/White was the order of the day. There was a change in the reporting marks (page 129) from "M" to "MTR due to the railroad receiving bills for the Monon Railroad for car usage due to the Monon using "MON" car reporting marks. The request was made to the AAR in February 1958 and granted on March 5, 1958 with the stipulation that the road use 8" lettering and numbering on all it's equipment. Hope that this is of some assistance. Regards, Tom Olsen 7 Boundary Road, West Branch Newark, Delaware, 19711-7479 (302) 738-4292 tmolsen@... Ed Hawkins wrote: Group, |

Ed, Tom, I don't know specifically about the color of the group
of quad hoppers that you are questioning about, but I do know for sure that the other hoppers that Montour owened were black. This was clearly shown in the color W/B videos on Western Maryland steam that have been available for years now. Regards, Jerry Stewart Chicago, Ill. --- In STMFC@..., "Thomas M. 1902? I didn't realize offset quads were built that early. Anyone know
what Erie series they came from? Al Brown, Melbourne, Fla. --- In STMFC@..., "Thomas M. Olsen" <tmolsen@...> wrote: summary. It states the following: |

Erie sold a bunch of them in the mid-late 1950s with some going to Norfolk Southern and Montour. Regarding the color, I knew that most (if not all) Montour hopper cars were painted black. However, the photo of Montour 100 (available from Bob's Photo) appears to be "light" and quite possibly a color other than black. Regards, Ed Hawkins |

Later last evening, I remembered that you said that the Quads came to the Montour in 1956. The cars and the number series that I cited from the Montour Book were probably scrapped at an earlier date and the number series used to renumber the Erie Quads. I have gone back and reread the book to see if I missed the 1956 acquisition of the Erie cars, but there is no reference to them at all. It seems that the author missed the Erie cars altogether. List,
Again, from Schaeffer's book, there were only two groups of hoppers that were not black - an Alcoa hopper that was delivered in natural aluminum, and was not interchanged, and a group of twins that were painted an approximation of PRR's Freight Car Color. Everything else would be black / white. Good luck, Angela |

Isn't that the experimental aluminum hopper? Every other MTR hopper I've seen was black. Elden -----Original Message-----

All of the Bill Price video and still shots of Moutour hoppers that I have do show black cars. However, I have a color shot of USRA clone twin 17144, reweigh MRR 3-56, built 2-37 from Bobs photo. It is painted oxide red. The same photo appears on pg 113 of Gene Schaffer's Montour book (in B&W) with the caption *Montour #17144 is one of about one hundred Montour hoppers painted to reflect parent PRR heritage.* Larry Kline Pittsburgh, PA |
