Kline & Culotta Freight car book
Folks,
There was some recent discussion about the availability of the book "The Postwar Freight Car Fleet" by STMFC listers Larry Kline and Ted Culotta, published by the NMRA. My copy was on the door step when I got home at lunch today so they are out! While I haven't had a chance to look through the whole thing yet <G>, what I have seen so far looks great. To paraphrase Bruce's post about this book...............yes, they are out! My was waiting for me when I got back to the house Thursday evening. Great Book! Larry and Ted did a great job bringing the large number of these in-service photos into print in one location where they can be seen and the information used!

Larry Kline
Here is some more information about the book. The photos were taken in
1946-48. The introduction is an overview of freight car history from 1898 to 1947 and briefly describes traffic in the Harrisburg, PA area where most of the photos were taken. The introduction is followed by eight chapters on box cars, reefers, stock cars, hoppers, covered hoppers, gondolas, flat cars and tank cars. The photos in each chapter are arranged chronologically to illustrate freight car design history. There are photos of most major US freight car designs and of cars owned by 102 railroads and private car lines. 240 pages, 8.5" x 11"; 350 photos; 14 tables, bibliography, index. Price: $49.95 for NMRA members, $64.95 for Non-members, $8.95 shipping. At $9.95, an introductory 6 month Railpass membership in the NMRA is less than the $15 difference between the member and non-member prices and includes Scale Rails, the NMRA member magazine. Call the NMRA at 423-892-2846 to take advantage of the Railpass membership. I received my copy of this book the other day and have spent many free
moments paging through the contents. I began devouring the text last night and am most impressed. Authors Larry Kline and Ted Culotta are commended for gearing the text towards educating the modeler and including a great deal of historical elements that tie together the larger picture of American railroading that the image collection helps to illustrate. The images are reproduced well with most spanning the page width. This volume should be a staple for anyone modeling the post-war period. One thought did cross my mind as I reviewed the many images. I recognized many freight cars as being available in model form, but there were so many more that have not yet been produced. We have been blessed with a diverse selection of models, but there are many more that await to grace our scale rails. Eric Hansmann Morgantown, W. Va. |
