NH Cabooses - "Essential Freight Cars"?

Just a sueggestion here. I love the Essential Freight Car series you
have been doing in RMC. Also have used a few for modeling techniques as well
as speciific cars. I suppose you have more freight car articles lined up (at
least conceptually)

. But how about doing an article or two on upgrading
cabooses. Technically not a freight car- but deferinitely essential for the
steam era. Besides ,with the considerable number of new cabooses that have been
by Atlas, Bowser, Walthers, etc., lately, it would be interesting to see what
could be done them.
Vince,

If I understand Ted Culotta's conception correctly, the "Essential Freight Car" series is to provide information and modeling tips about cars which could be seen on most railroads in North America. Most of the articles have been about boxcars because it was conceivable that any boxcar in the transition era could be seen on any road. Indeed, the distribution of ownership of foreign boxcars on any particular line were roughly proportional to the percentage of the national boxcar fleet that owner owned. Hoppers have mostly been excluded from the series because their range of operation was primarily regional although there were rare instances where they roamed widely - i.e. the occasional N&W hopper going over Sherman Hill.

That said, cabooses were even more restricted in their range of operation than hoppers as they stayed mostly on their home roads. Also, most of the caboose designs were of home road origin with some exceptions - the USRA "Northeastern Caboose" reproduced by P2K being one, but the owners of this caboose were mostly northeastern roads with little ownership elsewhere.

While there have been some articles in the national model magazines about cabooses, much more material is available from the sundry railroad historical societies where, in my opinion, the subject belongs.

Tim Gilbert

Ted Culotta <tculotta@...>

While I can state unequivocally that there is no more essential piece of freight equipment than a NH NE-5 caboose, Tim's assumption is correct that you won't see an article about one in the series anytime soon. Cabooses are quite subjective, making them a poor choice for something that should be essential. However, I will writeup the modeling of the NE-5 in a more appropriate forum.

While I can state unequivocally that there is no more essential
piece of freight equipment than a NH NE-5 caboose...
Unless you are modeling the west, in which case...
Peter, these cabooses could have been seen anytime in the Twin
Cities, Council Bluffs, Kansas City, as well as Chicago.
All within an easy afternoon drive of the Mississippi. Calling any of them
"the west" is a stretch unless you use the NewYorker's map.

Not the reply I was looking for. Neat maps, I think the 'Weather

cabooses.

Peter,

Your stance is both telling and ridiculous. In terms of being an "essential freight car" as Ted Culotta defined it in the first article of the RMC series, a caboose cannot be an "essential car" nationally. An NE-5, however, is "essential," however to Ted personally because he models the New Haven in the late 1940's. Since both CGW and B&M had clones of NE-5's, those modeling those roads may consider it "essential," too. Outside of these roads, an NE-5 would not be an "essential" piece of equipment.

As an adherent of far western roads, you have plenty of inexpensive caboose models to choose from steam era Athearn, Centralia Car Shops or "Laser Kits" from American Model Builders. Except for maybe F&C, there is no inexpensive NE-5 out there yet. So consider yourself lucky that you have a pretty good start to model caboose fleets of roads in your area which many adherents of other roads do not have.

I think Peter McClosky was joking, but the overall point that there is
no caboose that is an "essential" car nation wide should be clear.

BTW, F&C make an NE wood NH caboose, but no NE-5 (or any other NH
caboose). Brandford Hobbies had announced a resin model NE-5 around
the time that the Atlas NE-6 came out, I don't know what became of it.

The other options are brass from Alco or Overland, or the Carshops
almost-etched kit. Or scratch (at least there aren't a lot of rivets).
