GARX 50' RB Insulated Box Cars Leased by NKP and IC
Ed Hawkins
STMFC,
Does anyone have information on the quantity and inclusive car number series of GARX 50' insulated box cars built by General American in 1955 and 1957 and leased to Illinois Central and Nickel Plate? I have spent considerable time searching for this information, but have not been able to find answers. For the cars leased to NKP, I have a builder's photo of 51412 (built 3-55) and have seen 51416 published in Railmodel Journal. For the cars leased to IC, I have a builders' photo of GARX 51659 (built 4-57) and have seen a slide taken by Dick Kuelbs of GARX 51655. Any assistance on the respective quantities and GARX car number series of these cars will be greatly appreciated. It will be used in the forthcoming Railway Prototype Cyclopedia Volume 15 (soon to go to the printer). Regards, Ed Hawkins |

the NKPHTS magazine. According to the information there were 25 cars. The actual number series is unknown. I have a friend looking at older NKP annual reports from 1955 to see if these cars are mentioned. Sincerely, Brian J. Carlson P.E. Based on the general car numbering methods used by General American, and based on the car numbers documented by photographs, my best guess at this point is the number series was 51400-51424. However, it's best that this is substantiated with some source data. Regards, Ed Hawkins |
