Santa Fe mechanical dept mistakes

Note that I changed the subject <G>.

Richard Hendrickson writes:

"All true, but please note that these monstrosities were all constructed
before John Purcell became the Santa Fe's chief mechanical officer in
1912 and immediately began to get rid of them, as well as to bring the
Santa Fe's obsession with compound locos to an abrupt end in favor of
simple locos with Schmidt superheaters. The accomplishments of the
Santa Fe's mechanical department under Purcell, H. H. Lanning, and
Charles T. Ripley, culminating with the remarkable 4-6-4s, 4-8-4s, and
2-10-4s built for the Santa Fe between 1937 and 1944, are documented in
great detail in a new book by Larry Brasher, Santa Fe Steam Locomotive
Development, recently published by Signature Press."

Yep. I have the book.

As far as Santa Fe's design mistakes in the 30's, 40's and 50's goes...I'm thinking about them. And thinking...and thinking......Gimmeee time...

If the Caswell gondola was such a great idea, why did no one else copy
it? That's the basic standard that's been used here to defame PRR designs.

The CB&Q had Caswells, and it looks like some Canadian cars were built to a similar design if not under the Caswell patent.

"Shoot from the hip" O'Connor once again shoots himself in the foot.

1. The Caswell gondola was not a Santa Fe design. It was designed and
patented by the National Dump Car Co.; see e.g. pp. 124-125 in the 1922
Car Builders' Cyclopedia.

2. Numerous other RRs ordered drop bottom gondolas of Caswell design,
both composite and all steel, though they were different in some
details from the cars built by AC&F for the Santa Fe. Granted, the
Santa Fe owned more Caswell gons than any other RR, but that's because
they used them in the same kind of service for which eastern RRs bought
hopper cars. The Santa Fe owned NO coal hoppers until 1929 and very
few of them before the mid-1950s, preferring (like other western RRs)
to use GS gondolas for coal and similar bulk minerals.

The Q Caswells were identical to the AT&SF Ga.O - no heavy end bracing and a floor resting on the center sill that prevented the end doors from opening fully. I have plans to do these if I live long enough. - Al Westerfield

Gee Bill, that was heinous. I think you should send everyone on the list two cartons of the
Branchline product of their choice for reparations.
