From: Ed Hawkins FYI, BLT has two cars, #1421 with a 6 ft door, 4/4 ends, and panel Kurt,Your statement above is not correct. MP's 40' AAR box cars built 1955-1959 all had 8' door openings. MoPac's 40' AAR box cars built 1950-1954 all had 6' door openings.< KL> You are right, Ed, of course. That was a transcription error on my part. MoPac had no 40' AAR box cars with 4/4 Improved Dreadnaught Ends, otherthan two series of 40' auto cars with 15' door openings.< KL> Huh. An error like this is generally uncommon for BLT, isn't it? Here's a list of cars built from 1950-1954 in the order built (all carsbuilt by MP at DeSoto shops). . .< KL> Thanks for the info, Ed. No I know where to go. KL> I see that within the range 35350-38874 the cubic capy of the 9-4 IW cars varied from 3898 to 4000, and the welded cars you mentioned were 3952. Some had DF loaders but there isn't a correspondence between loaders and capy. Any idea why this was so? KL |

Response from the MoPac group so far:
The link is wrong but if you change it to <http://www.branchline- trains.com/blueprint/40boxcars/40%27aar6/bra_1421.jpg> you will get the MP car. Jerry Glow -- Thanks! Hi: I have been looking for a HO model to represent the MP 40 ft, 10-6 IH, 3898 cu ft, 6 ft door boxcars; preferably the 19000 - 19999 series, but others may be identical. I see Branchline has an MP model #1420 but the fullsize pic linked to the thumbnail is a NCSTL car. The kit has "4/4 ends and panel roof" but I don't know if that's right for the car number as other MP cars with these dimensions had 5/5 DE or 1/3/4 IDE. Does anyone know the BLT car number and if its correctly configured? If not, how about a suggestion for a model? Thanks, KL |

I believe that kit represents 34600-35099 built 1950

MoPac's 40' AAR box cars built 1950-1954 all had 6' door openings. MoPac had no 40' AAR box cars with 4/4 Improved Dreadnaught Ends, other than two series of 40' auto cars with 15' door openings. Here's a list of cars built from 1950-1954 in the order built (all cars built by MP at DeSoto shops). The following all have 6' door openings, R+3/4 (early) Improved Dreadnaught Ends, diagonal panel roofs, Youngstown doors (like the ones provided in the BT kits), and 8-rung ladders. The BT AAR box cars with 6' door openings (undecorated version that provide the different roof and end options) are accurate for these cars. MP 34600-35099, 11-50 StLB&M 19500-19999, 12-52 I-GN 19000-19499, 1-53 MP 35100-35349, 2-54 I-GN 17601-17715, 5-54 StLB&M 18465-18599, 7-54 All MP 40' AAR box cars built 1955-1959 (35350-38874) had 8' door openings, diagonal panel roofs, later-version Improved Dreadnaught Ends, and 7-rung ladders. There are more variations on these cars, including one group with welded sides (series 38875-39014) built by AC&F in 1959 and some riveted-side cars with 6-panel Superior doors built in 1958. All carried MP reporting marks from the start except for one order of 200 Missouri-Illinois cars, series 4300-4499, built 11-57. All MP cars with riveted sides and 8' doorways have longer side sills on either side of the door than on the Branchline models. This is depicted on the STMFC web site photo and short article I submitted on modifying the BT underframe to accommodate cars with 8' door openings. If you choose to paint/letter any of these cars I suggest you obtain decals from Oddballs, who has the most accurate sans-serif type style used by MoPac. Regards, Ed Hawkins |

From: Kurt Laughlin FYI, BLT has two cars, #1421 with a 6 ft door, 4/4 ends, and panel roof, and #1509 that has an 8-ft door, 1/3/4 IDE, and diagonal roof. The latter is shown as MP 36125, which if my 1961 ORER is correct, should have a 6 ft door. ----- Original Message ----- Sorry I got distracted and sent too early. . . I meant to ask, is the BLT #1421 accurate for any MP series? KL |

From: Ed Hawkins The MP 40' AAR box car offered by BT is a slightly later car with 8'Thanks Ed. It sounds like it could be made from their undec kit which has all the end and roof options. FYI, BLT has two cars, #1421 with a 6 ft door, 4/4 ends, and panel roof, and #1509 that has an 8-ft door, 1/3/4 IDE, and diagonal roof. I have been looking for a HO model to represent the MP 40 ft, 10-6Kurt, The 19000-19999 series cars were built late 1952 to early 1953. I-GN was assigned 19000-19499 and StLB&M got 19500-19999. All cars were built by MP at their DeSoto, Mo. shops. The cars had R+3/4 Improved Dreadnaught Ends that were used from 1948 through 1954. All cars had 6' door openings and diagonal panel roofs. These cars are shown in an article on MoPac's 40' all-steel box cars (not including steel rebuilds) that was published in the Summer 1995 Eagle. This issue is available for purchase from the MPHS (www.mopac.org) company store. The MP 40' AAR box car offered by BT is a slightly later car with 8' door openings built 1956. In 2003 the MPHS had Branchline produce 600 exclusive kits that were offered to MPHS members, and they included models in both of these groups. These kits were highly authentic and sold out fast, but you might find them on eBay from time to time. After 1956 the reporting marks reverted to M.P., however, it took several years for the cars to be routed through the shops and to either be completely repainted or to have their reporting marks stencils changed. I know Sunshine made a mini-kit that served as a door prize at Naperville a few years ago. If I recall, it was for a IGN 10-6 car, and included the parts needed to modify an InterMountain 10-6 boxcar. Believe they were IGN 17XXX series.
Hope this helps a little. Marty |
