I went down to the art store and
bought three high-quality reddish brown pencils, plus a medium gray.
I randomly worked the individual boards with the pencils, plus some
smudging and the black wash. The result was quite realistic to my eye
and turned a nice, but unspectacular, structure into something I'm
quite proud of.
This sounds great. How about an article with photos in one of the
modeling magazines?

The classic article in RMC about weathering freight cars with oil
paints was weak on weathering wood side cars.

I have done whole structures using the Prismacolor pencils. I used Polly Scale paints to do the mortar lines on my scratchbuilt NYC interlocking tower and circuit breaker houses then used the pencils to do the brick color. I then used inda ink and alcohol to weather and seal the pencil color. A final coat of dullcoat finished it off nicely.
