Stauffer books

Ed Mines writes re: Al Stauffer-
Yes, he was a know-it-all but he didn't write all of the books. MyEd is of course correct, but in my mind I usually associate these books with the other author. The excellent book he did on NH steam power with Swanberg is a fine example. Again, adverse comments on writing ability aside, I still would seek out each and every one of Stauffer's books- if for the only reason that they will so often turn out to be the only sources of information on a given subject. I guess the B&O people were a little more lucky as Larry Sagel wrote the text for the B&O Power book. That said there still were many errors in the text and captions. Many B&O people contributed and produced a document with the all the corrections. The B&O Power book served as a revised version of Sagel's "A Picture History of B&O Motive Power" which in turn was a compliation of a series of articles Sagel wrote for the "B&O Magazine". I often heard the story that Stauffer never revised the books because he had them all printed at one time stored them in a barn and only had additional copies bound to replace his stock. The value in Stauffer's books is in the photos- which in aggregate are indeed hard to find most anywhere else without a lot of work.
Far too often, Staufer had never a clue as where the border lay between in-your-face political and social comments, blatant unsupported opinion on any subjects, and good solid data relating to the railroad subject at hand- and he made lavish use of this ignorance. As a result, the writing can be abysmal and/or stupifyingly shallow, to say the very least- and frustratingly, I have never thought that he actually ever cared. That said :-) , I value each and every one of his books, if for the only reason that there is nothing else out there to substitute- and the photos are pretty absorbing. Denny -- Denny S. Subject: [STMFC] Stauffer books At one time Al Stauffer published about half a dozen steam locomotive picture books - "Erie Power", "Pennsy Power", "B&O Power" ...... At the time they were written they were excellent except for the authors' likes and dislikes. There are few pictures of Erie 2-8-0s for example. Most of the photos are classic loco portraits; there aren't any good freight car photos. I will definitely keep "Erie Power". Does anyone want any of the others?
