AH&D Steam Crane...

eabracher@...

Jack, Do you know what model it was?

Anything like my AH&D ditcher #3013-DT?

see www.riograndemodels.com

I have a AH&D catalog that may cover what you are looking for. The AH&D
ditchers had pile driver attachments.

Speaking of M of W equipment, the Yosemite Valley Railroad owned a steam
crane described as:

An American Hoist and Derrick 18-ton locomotive steam crane, combination
shovel and pile driver, boom 27', shovel capacity 1 yard.

Before I start working up drawings based entirely on photos in order to
scratchbuild this piece of equipment, does anyone have plans for such a
crane or know where I might obtain them?

Thanks

I dont know about plans for the AH&D Locomotive Crane but Walthers produced a model of the Ohio Locomotive Crane a few years back (dont know the part numbers). Also, about 30 years ago Stewart Products produced a kit for a Locomotive Crane but I'm not sure if was the Ohio or AH&D version (might have been based on someone elses Crane).

That Walthers model may still be available but I doubt you will find the Stewart Products kit. It was a white metal and brass kit. The one I have I will build someday. Also for that kit there is a longer boom and a clamsheel bucket.

Correction: The Walthers Crane IS a representation of the American Crane of the 50's and is a diesel version rather than steam but probably could be modified to represent steam. The part number for the unpowered version is 932-5610 (and others in that series). It appears some on line dealers have them.

Unfortunately, it is a 25-ton crane and considerably different in appearance than the 1926-vintage YV crane...

Hi Jack,

American Hoist and Derrick is still in business in St. Paul, Mn. They might have plans yet.

Thanks...Robert Federle e-mailed me off-line and gave me their web address
and I plan to e-mail them about the YV crane. The biggest problem may be the
model number of the YV crane...without it (and I don't have it), they may
not be able to help. Eric Bracher of Rio Grande Models (who sells a AH&D
crane but an older version) pointed out that the Sierra Railroad's similar
crane still exists in Jamestown at the California State Railroad Museum's
Railtown 1897state park. Kyle Wyatt, Curator for the CSRM, gave me the info
on that crane along with some photos and it looks, at first glace, very
similar. I plan to go up there and measure it if AH&D doesn't come
through....

True....and it depends on whether the company responds to us hobbyists.
Twenty-five years ago, I asked Fairmont about the speeders owned by the YV
and then sent me a letter (remember those?) listing all of the speeders sold
to the YV along with model numbers and purchase dates. I envisioned someone
at Fairmont with a green visor and card index having all of this
information. Years later, I sent them a letter about a Fairmont weed burner
purchased by the YV and they sent me a large scale drawing of it. I doubt
that they would do that today....

Some of this is true, however...

Some time back a question arose pertaining to the paint that DuPont used on Railway Express Agency cars during the 50's. I inquired with DuPont and after a few days received a reply. She gave me the formula numbers for the records they still had on file (three I believe). She also stated any DuPont dealer could mix these according to formula and she supplied a list of dealers. The same question arose about some B&O colors. I again inquired and she sent formula numbers for the TWO colors they had remaining on file.

I think there is a willingness to help but in many cases that material just does not exist anymore. Alot depends on how they are approached and it helps if you can explain the need for the information.

Case in point...I was asked to supply a paint diagram to the B&O Museum (and this is way out of the scope of STMFC but using to make a point) for the Chessie GP38 #3802. EMD gave the OK saying they had no comntrol over drawings that age and no longer had any. I had an issue with CSX stating I needed a license agreement (which was free) and they asked for a copy for their records as they no longer had drawings either.

I too have sent an information request to AOL Crane (American Ohio Locomotive Crane) and will see what I get back.

Sorry about the off topic part.

This is what I've found as well on WW II military equipment. Cleaver Brooks sent info on an amphibious trailer, a steel foundry group sent info on casting symbols, and Firestone sent me drawings of a 1940 cross-country combat tire. The corporate information director of a sucessor company to several armored vehicle manufacturers *called* me to report that they sadly didn't have any records left. . .
