Ted's Essential Freight Cars

John Fitts <jefitts2003@...>

Like a lot of you, I reckon, I've been collecting Ted Culotta's Essential Freight Cars series from numero uno.

Now all of a sudden I've discovered I'm missing two: #27, which I think was published in the January 2006 RMC, and #34, which appeared between Sept.-December 2006. Can anyone help me with the correct issue dates for nos. 27 and 34? Thanks.

I hope Bill Schaumburg realizes the treasure he has in Ted Culotta and
the Essential Freight Cars series. It was this series that made me a
subscriber to RMC. When that series ends I will certainly consider
dropping my subscription.

Jared.
I know that Ted has a lot on his plate. He is trying
to put out more kits, which takes a lot of time. The
EFCs takes a lot of time. Lets not forget the good
ole' full time job! There will be more. How do I
know????? He likes it way too much.. Right, Ted????

I shared Jared's feelings with Bill Schaumburg (who, with such a limited
staff, must limit the amount of time for lists such as ours) and he
obviously knows the value of Ted's series. He wrote back:

"Ted Culotta's Essential Freight Car series has been and continues to be an
important part of RMC and the hobby. The nature of the research and modeling
work, combined with the pace of the calendar's flipping pages, has made it
impossible for him to keep these coming on a monthly basis. However, Ted
says he has "more." "More" is great!

Although the series name is Ted's and will remain so, we should not make him
do all the freight car work himself! We (RMC) welcome articles of this
nature and caliber and encourage modelers to share their work in our pages.
I hope this is not taken as a blatant commercial. It is simply that we are
at another threshold in the history of the hobby, and it is up to its best
practitioners to continue to move it forward."

That explains why the use of the word 'essential' in my aricle. The
model or another similar car could be considered essential I guess.
But, the modeling was no where near what Ted called essential!!

I know this question has been asked before, I forgot the answer,

-BUT-

have Ted's Essential Freight Car articles been complied into book form?

If so under what title?

Yes, I read all the other follow-on posts in this thread, but I have to start here. I am quite
surprised to read that Jared would drop RMC because Ted's not there anymore (if that comes to pass).
Of the magazines, I'll probably let MR drop away before RMC; I've been "introduced" to model
railroading one too many times now. Make that about five too many times . . .

I'll newsstand cherry-pick, for the articles that look like something I can learn something from. I
find RMC has one or two articles I can learn from every month.

Like Clark Propst' M&StL article this last month. Nice work, both the car and the article.
