The Walthers description says the cars were built to transport the "heavier iron ores of Michigan's Upper Peninsula." I always thought the (slight) dimensional differences between the Minnesota and Michigan style ore cars was the fact that the holding pockets on the iron ore docks were spaced differently. Is Michigan ore denser, or is there another explanation? Thanks for any help. Sincerely, Robert D. Heninger Iowa City, Iowa |

Think they'll come with wire grabs? If they're anything

like the Walthers 2893 PS-2, i wouldn't feel too excited. Wasn't this prototype in the old MDC lineup, which means Athearn still has the tooling? Tim O'Connor This caught me by surprise (yea!): |

Bob:
The spacing of the pockets is the same, but the spacing of the tracks is closer on the docks serving the Michigan ore ranges. I don't know if the Michigan ores are denser. Will have to do some research to answer that question. One possibility for the difference in dimensions is that most of the Michigan mines were underground, and the cars had to fit between the supports for the pockets in the headframes. There was an article in the September 1994 issue of MAINLINE MODELER, by Patrick Dorin on these cars. Karl Peters [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

While I will admit that I am somewhat glad that Walthers is
producing these 70 ton cars, I really keep hoping that someone would mass-produce a 50 ton steel ore car, a much more common car in the steam era of the ore operations of the Michigan upper peniunsula ore operations. I've heard rumors that Tichy was considering a car design that C&NW, Soo, and DSS&A each used, I've not heard anymore about that project. Is there any news on that front? And yes I do have some of the excellent Westerfield GN cars, also used by the Lake Superior and Ishpeming. And a note of possible interest regarding the width of the "Michigan" car. And okay I admit that this is outside of steam era: the Wisconsin Central had to remove every other track in the old Escanaba C&NW ore yard when the yard was converted over to handling regular freight cars.
