SP DF B-50-22

Brian J Carlson <brian@...>

Does anyone make decals for the orange and black "DF" rectangle applied to
the SP boxcars starting in the mid 1950's. Alternatively, Does anyone know
where I can locate a p2k kit for the 50' B-50-22 81574 it was lettered in
this scheme? See the bottom photo on page 271 of SP Freight Cars V 4 for a
photo.

Brian, Walthers used to make that decal, but I have heard it's no longer available. I didn't know that P2K had ever done the DF scheme with correct orange lettering (their SP "expert" told them it should be yellow in the first run), but if they did, that would be a good find.

Tony: Thanks for the info. I know the car number I mentioned was the one on
the p2k car because I was surprised it was in V4. I really do not know if it
was first run or a later one. I think it was a later run since the dealer
that had it ususally sells only new run stuff. I saw it at a train show in
September, and was going to pick it up but my friend said he had one he
could sell me. Turns out he had a DD car which was totally different. I
thought the "DF" was orange since I had your book and remembered it was
supposed to be orange. However, I can not find the car on Walthers website.

A pet peeve I wish manufacturers would leave item numbers and thumbnail
views of sold out/OOP cars on their websites for those of us thrying to
track down old cars.

Life-Like used to maintain a list of sold-out and OOP cars on their P2K
website; sadly, that went away when Walthers bought the line.

Kadee maintains a list of sold-out/OOP models.

I'd second Brian's comment. I'm sometimes wondering if someone made a particular car already, or if
I need to do some additional work to make one. One in particular is that somebody made a tank car
lettered for SINCLAIR a few years ago; I know that I saw the car advertised, and thought "I'd like
one or two of those." But it was only five or six months later that the passing thought returned,
and I could not find that original advert again. Nor could I find any reference to it in
manufacturers' web pages. Sure, likely sold out, but it would not be the first time I've had to
web-crawl dealer's shelves looking for unsold new stock.

Schuyler, several manufacturers (e.g., Athearn, Red Caboose) have
produced bogus models with Sinclair P/L, but the only accurate model
I'm aware of is a Proto 2000 10K gal. One or two of those shouldn't
be too hard to track down on the resale market.

Thanks, Richard, that's probably the one I saw advertized. And this is probably the lead I need to
find it.

I somehow thought it was a Red Caboose model . . .

Richard is correct on the Sinclair Proto 2000 10K gal. cars in two
styles, insulated and uninsulated. They came in kits, time-saver kits
and assembled. However, it has been tough to track down any of the
cars. In the past year, I have been able to find kits for both styles
and only one assembled model, but they are scarce and it took a lot of
time on the internet checking the inventories of almost every hobby
shop that has a searchable data base. Walthers does list them all if
you include out-of-stock in your search. There was one dealer in
Europe that had a couple of cars several months ago, but there was no
way to order online. An alternative is to use undecorated kits (which
are also had to find) and the Champ Sinclair decal sets which are
still available. The only problem there is that as Richard pointed
out in a previous post, the Champ set is for a 8K gal. car which
Sinclair did not own. Good luck.

I'll third that. Web space is almost free. It amazes me that sellers don't take the time to describe their products well on the web. It is easy and esentially free to do so.

While not a freight car, MRC website for their decoders is the worst. Why bother making different products if you are not going to tell the public what is different about them?

For those manufacturers that frequent this list, please put good information on the web, we will buy more if you do.

If you tick the following box in the Walthers advanced search window,

You'll find many of the OOP kits and models listed.

"include discontinued out of stock products"
