Bill Schneider to Rapido Trains

Mike Brock <brockm@...>

I received a most interesting message yesterday which I think I'll share with the group.

Bill Schneider of Branchline Trains will be joining Rapido Trains as of May 1. Bill will be working to develop models of American prototypes for Rapido so get your wish lists together. I understand that freight cars are in the mix.

I understand also that part of the deal is that Bill...and perhaps Jason Shron, president of Rapido, as well...will need to find there way down to Cocoa Beach next Jan 7-10 in order to well...warm up...and to ferret out the best candidates for American prototypes. Included, of course, will be my personal list...UP this and UP that...although a good model of the NYC 1922 USRA clone/1923 AAR steel box car would not be a bad idea. So...get your pencils sharpened.

Let's see. Branchline Bill will now be Rapid Bill? Given that Bill is a major player in my Prototype Rails op session, somehow the term "rapid" doesn't seem to apply...as anyone who has attended my session can atest to. Still, it will be interesting to see if we things speed up.

Hmmm. A UP HK-50-1?

Garth G. Groff <ggg9y@...>

Mike,

Maybe Bill would consider the General American 1953 46' GS gons used by both the D&RGW and WP. Yeah, I know; they had different gate mechanisms, but otherwise nearly identical. This is a car that D&RGW fans need dozens of, and we WP/SN/TS fans would hock our first-born male children for, even with the D&RGW gate mechanisms.

After that, how about AC&F type 7 tank cars (high walkway) in 8 and 10 K sizes? Dozens and dozens of possible roadnames on these, and a common underframe plus other duplicate parts would make them a natural for economical production. Oh, yes, WP again on the 10 K cars.

Kind regards,

Garth G. Groff

I'll echo Garth on the?high walkway tanks cars.? And I'll add the Enterprise-design GS gons used by the C&S, NP, and others.? Those would make me very happy.

There are still many freight cars with multiple owners
that are not available in plastic... or at least high
quality plastic... some that spring immediately to mind:

AAR alternate standard twin offset hoppers
125 ton GSC depressed center flat cars (MANY owners)
Bethlehem 52'6" mill gondolas
16,000 gallon tank cars (1950's)
40 ft PC&F reefers w/ 6' plug doors & correct ends

and how about let's retire the Bowsers and redo the

PRR X31 & X32 box cars!! (lotsa road names too)

I'd love to see those GS gondolas people mentioned, esp UP
and NP, but what are the chances, really?

I do love the NYC steel box cars idea, but by my modeling
era most of them had been rebuilt (if not retired) and the
rebuilds aren't available even in resin.

Sounds interesting, should be some neat things and hopefully kits!

There has been a bunch of great suggestions and I would appreciate 10' high boxcars. 10, 12 panel in forty and fifty foot lengths with various ends. B&O M-55 class and other roads had some of these, Espee, SF, etc.

And those Bethlehem gons as Tim mentioned. Maybe some Duryea underframes too!!!

I wouldn't mind seeing a General American 36' Wood Meat Reefer, a 36' Mather Stock Car, the standard AC&F 36' Double Sheathed Box Car, a AT&SF Sk-G stock car, or a AC&F-built Hart convertible gondola.

And of course any Armour 37' wood meat reefer or any Wilson 36' wood meat reefer would be fantastic too.

But of course that's just me.

Some background about Rapido Trains--

Owned by Jason Shron, a self-admitted "rivet counter", Rapido Trains concentrates on very accurate RTR HO and N scale models of Canadian passenger equipment that was running in the mid-1980's.

http://www.rapidotrains.com/index2.html

They started with CN Pullman and CC&F passenger equipment built in the mid-1950's.

http://www.rapidotrains.com/scl04c.html

Excellent and reasonably priced models all, and the level of detail on these cars has given the competition (Walthers especially) a run for their money.

They are bringing out a complete 10-car set with three F-units for CPR's Budd-built "The Canadian".

The Osgood-Bradley coaches coming out soon from them are Jason's first models of US cars.

http://www.rapidotrains.com/obproject01.html

And the detail on them is of the same quality as other Rapido cars--

http://www.rapidotrains.com/obproject02.html

A new freight car line has been started, the first car being a CPR wide-vision caboose built from the late 1960's to 1980.

http://www.rapidotrains.com/tyard01.htm

I should mention that Jason already has been besieged by we Canadians for more, more, MORE, models of Canadian cars. With Bill Schneider joining Rapido, US prototype modellers are in for a treat.

The only issue I see, is the price. Rapido has a higher price point on
their products compared to others. If they branch into the US car
market, are they going to be similar to what the RTR prices are for
Branchline and such? Or are they going to be setting a new
affordability bar?

I take exception to the "rivet counter" characterization and all that implies.? There are obvious reasons for this but mostly painting very accurate Canadian prototype in US road schemes that were never on those cars is the primary reason for it.? A true "rivet counter" would not do that.? That being said, it is a common business practice of many when the amount of sales of the prototype models won't cover the cost of development.? A necessary evil if you will but it does cast question on the "rivet counter" characterization.

Jerry,

The first Shake N Take clinic was the KCS 40-foot rebuild from the ACCURAIL
car with a USRSA Double Sheathed underframe. The X29b while I had
considered it was more problematic. The logical kit to start with is the Branchline
kit with the 7-foot door (8-foot for the X29d), the Red Caboose X29
underframe and it just becomes way to complicated to do under what I would
consider the "a couple of weekend worth of work" constraints I place on the
project.

So you are right it is a kitbash that has been done, but not by me in a
very long time, both as a matter of fact but likely no one really remembers,
so Rich is correct we need the X29b and the X29d in mass.

Now in my most humble opinion what we really could use are all the later
Santa Fe reefers with the plug doors and of course the RR54/55/56 Santa Fe
mechanical reefers (true steam era freight car) and what Rapido needs is a
quick home-run to build buyer confidence that it really was a good
collaboration... Here's your home run fellows...

I received a most interesting message yesterday which I think I'll share
with the group.

Bill Schneider of Branchline Trains will be joining Rapido Trains as of May
1. Bill will be working to develop models of American prototypes for Rapido
so get your wish lists together. I understand that freight cars are in the
mix.

I understand also that part of the deal is that Bill...and perhaps Jason
Shron, president of Rapido, as well...will need to find there way down to
Cocoa Beach next Jan 7-10 in order to well...warm up...and to ferret out the
best candidates for American prototypes. Included, of course, will be my
personal list...UP this and UP that...although a good model of the NYC 1922
USRA clone/1923 AAR steel box car would not be a bad idea. So...get your
pencils sharpened.

Let's see. Branchline Bill will now be Rapid Bill? Given that Bill is a
major player in my Prototype Rails op session, somehow the term "rapid"
doesn't seem to apply...as anyone who has attended my session can atest to.
Still, it will be interesting to see if we things speed up.

Hmmm. A UP HK-50-1?

Actually, that will give you a nice stand-in.? The underframe will not be accurate.? The truck spacing will not be accurate.? The X29b was a new body on the X29 underframe with channels added to each side to increase the width.? These underframes did not have the standard truck spacing.? The only kitbash available is to put the Branchline body on the Sunshine underframe which pushes the cost beyond reason when a fleet of these cars are needed.??

The?X29d?has an overhanging roof which is not available in a 40 ft length.? The best you can do is cut 10 ft from the Branchline 50 ft?OH roof.? Similar underframe issues remain as seen with the X29B.

Wishing for other cars (which I do also) and being realistic about what a company may produce are entirely different.? Mass produced plastic?cars?need to?be projected to sell thousands of copies to make the investment risk acceptable.

That's really a simple kitbash of a Branchline 7' door body with a USRA style
underframe. It was the subject of the first Cocoa Beach "Shake and Take" clinic
using an Accururail body. I'd rather see something that is not as easily doable.

Not for us STMFC folks, if he sticks to the mid-1980s.
I don't think Jason is stuck in the 80's. He seems to be open to other eras. Witness the 1954 CN passenger cars and the 30's era Osgood-Bradley cars. Hopefully he can find a steam era freight car with broad enough sales appeal to make producing it worthwhile.
