Red Caboose
Des Norman
Hi,
I'm wondering if something's changed at Red Caboose. About a month ago I ordered some X29 kits and had an acknowledgement from Bill, but nothing has arrived yet. I've not had a reply to 2 emails since, and now the phone appears to be unavailable. Does anyone know if there's a problem there, please? Des Norman |

I just talked to Bob, the sales person at Red Caboose yesterday. He said that the move will take another 2-3 weeks, and for the mean time, they are still at the old location. The new quarters are less than 2 miles away. They are still active participants in the RR mfg'ing industry.

Red Caboose also has it on their website, straight from the horse's mouth. Hopefully we will soon see a Union Pacific stock car based on the SP cars they did. Keeping the fingers crossed.

If you go by Red Caboose's classification that they are selling a S-40-5 than you are out of luck with a UP S-40-5 because they didn't have any.
The UP, OSL, and O-WR&N had S-40-4 Harriman stock cars and didn't own any S-40-5 Harriman stock cars. That is according to the Oct 2006 RMJ article called "Harriman Standard (UP/SP/WP) 36-foot Stock Cars From Red Caboose Models" by Richard Hendrickson. According to Anthony Thompson's SP Freight Cars Volume 1 book, the S-40-5 was basically a S-40-4 with a modified underframe (double center sills). Plus it had a feed door only on the A-end of the car. And comparing a S-40-4 and a S-40-5 you can see that there is a noticable difference between the two car's underframes. The -5 appears (to me anyway) to have a larger and deeper underframe than the -4. I don't have any pictures to compare the ends on the -4 and the -5 so I can't say for sure what the differences are. From what I have found the following railroads owned S-40-5 stock cars: NWP (5670 to 5729) - 60 cars, built in 1916 GH&SA (62100 to 62199) - 100 cars, built in 1916 H&TC (62200 to 62349) - 150 cars, built in 1916 SP (73349 to 73798) - 450 cars, built in 1916 to 1917 SPdeM (12051 to 12091) - 51 cars, built in 1915 T&NO (62100 to 62199) - ex-GH&SA (transferred in 1930) T&NO (62200 to 62349) ex-H&TC (transferred in 1930) Its too bad that Red Caboose didn't start with the S-40-4 first since there were more roads that owned them including the UP, OSL, and O-WR&N. These would have included the SP, GH&SA, HE&WT, H&TC, NWP, PE, T&NO, and SPdeM. - Steve Hedlund, Everett, WA To: STMFC@... From: leakinmywaders@... Steve,
All very true. The UP S-40-6 will involve new tooling. The UPHS is attempting to "get it right", lest we incur the wrath of the knowledgable members of the STMFC! :) Regards, -Jeff ________________________________ From: STMFC@... Chris,
I can definitely say that the cars will be UP S-40-6, but the details differed on some of the cars, and the details changed over the years. I am not sure which detail version will be produced; you'll have to wait for an official announcment for that. What specific UP stock cars are you looking for, and what year do you model?
